Surplus? How about cutting patch cables for purpose. When I worked for Comcast to make the wire plant a showplace, every patch cable was custom cut. One of their head ends made the cover of a few data center magazines.

I did that (probably badly) during work experience in the late 90's.... then soon went on to study to become a software developer.... (eventually becoming a data engineer)... which may explain my last post.... likely many of my posts....

When I was young I worked in retail at a store called Meijer, back then there was no Home Depot's so the Home Improvement area had lumber, bathroom fixtures.
I worked in the Hardware department next to Home Improvements and my buddy and I was walking past the displays of toilets and a mother put her daughter on one of the display toilets. She looked at us and said..."Don't worry I will flush it when she is done..."
