Cannot Create a Group

I know this should be easy, but im trying to group several Leviton dimmers together and when I hit done nothing happens. I will not create the group?

Hi Markmelton, welcome to Hubtitat!

By Leviton dimmers you mean the dimmers in the wall? Not the bulbs?
It's my understanding that you can only group bulbs and devices like that... Not the buttons/switches/dimmers in the wall.

What are you trying to accomplish?

I have Hubitat Groups that contain a mixture of In-Wall Switches/Dimmers as well as Smart Bulbs. These groups all work fine for my use-cases.

Ok, I'm only using the HE about two weeks now. But in my case I can't choose any switch or dimmer in the pulldowns, so I presumed It's only meant for light bulbs and devices like that. Can you tell me what the use-case / benefit is of grouping switches?

Sure - I have a Group called "Outdoor Lights" and another called "Downstairs Lights". I use these Groups in Rule Machine automations as well as Amazon Alexa Routines to control these large groups of lights. This provides the major benefit of allowing me the ability to adjust the membership of these groups without ever having to touch the automations that use them again. Also, I prefer to group lights in a room such that they can take advantage of Zigbee Group Messaging to avoid the 'popcorn effect' found when individually addressing bulbs.

So if I get it right it's what I said... Bulb and other light sources... Why do people call does switches? A switch is (in my understanding) a flipper in a wall to control a lightbulb, a dimmer is somewhat the same. And a dimmable light bulb is just a bulb which is dimmable... But in the English language or just in the way HA people speak a dimmer is a lightbulb that can be dimmed... A switch is a bulb that gives light...
But how do you call a device in a wall that switches on / off a lightbulb then? And what do you actually group: blubs or the things in the wall that control bulbs or both?

The dimmers are Leviton DZ6HD zwave in wall dimmer switches. I have 8 of them and would like to group them together so i can put an icon on the HE dashboard which will turn them all on or off at once. When attempting to create a group, it allows me to select the dimmers but when i hit done nothing happens and no group is created.

The Hubitat Groups and Scenes App allows the selection of "Bulbs", "Dimmers", and "Switches" as shown below.

@frits In the USA home automation vernacular, people usually refer to in-wall smart devices as either a Smart "Switch" (on/off only) or a Smart "Dimmer" (on/off/level.) Smart "Bulbs" are almost always both a "Switch" and a "Dimmer", and can also support "Color Temperature" and/or "RGB Color".

Not sure if this helps explain things or makes it even more confusing.

Ok, in that case they are "smart dimmers". When i click onthe dimmers group in your photo above they are listed there and i select them. But when i hit done, nothing happens, no group is created, its almost like the "done" button does not work.

Did you give the group a name? It is a mandatory field to have a name. God knows how often I skip by that line....

Yeah, I guess it will never get any clearer
So you can group "smart switches" and "smart dimmers" (only I can't because they are not visible in my group selection drop-downs(Philips Hue Dimmer Switch's)) to what end?

I hear you. Have you looked in your list of devices to see if the "Group Device" has been created?

Do you have any other Groups created that do work? I am hoping not... my suggestion to you would be to make sure you name the Groups something unique (although that shouldn't prevent the group from being created.) You could REMOVE the Hubitat Groups and Scenes App (which will remove all Groups/Scenes that you're already created!!! - be careful!!!) and then reinstall the Groups and Scenes App and try it again. Just a guess...

If that doesn't work, contact support@hubitat.com to see if they can help figure it out.

yes i made sure i gave the group a name, i have tried it about 20 times in a row with no success.

And if you try to create a group just with one (preferably other) device? Does it make the group?

yes i looked in my devices and the group is not there, I did name it a unique name as well

the only devices i have in my system are the leviton smart dimmers, so i cannot create a group with other devices. I will try uninstalling the group and scenes app and see what that does.

Is your Philips Hue Dimmer Switch actually one of the battery powered devices? If so, that is really a Button Controller to Hubitat. It cannot receive commands, it can only issue commands. Thus, it will never show up as a Switch, Dimmer, or Bulb that could be selected. You would select the actual Philips Hue Bulbs to control them.

Have you tried a different web browser?

I have tried edge browser, chrome and and internet explorer, i thought the same thing that it might be browser, but none of those 3 work.

Now i tried to remove groups and scenes app and same thing, i click on the red button to remove and nothing happens? I cant remove the app?

Have you rebooted your Hub recently? Sounds like you may have a database corruption issue. If detected during a reboot, the system will automatically revert to one of its automatic backups to try to get a clean database.

You may want to contact support@hubitat.com to see what they recommend.
