So, after finally getting my tasker rules set up so that I can easily change the HUB ID in all of my and my wife's routines that touch maker API, I started doing some browsing.
For one, I wanted to get an idea of the layout of the unit itself and see what I might need to change on my stand for my old C7. Looks like I am going to have to print another one to accommodate a flat layout instead of the one that I have with it on its side now unless I get new antennas. (Am I wrong in thinking the LED is NOT on the opposite side of the antennas?) No big deal - have filament - will print if I have to.
Current Setup - yes the wires are messy.... fixing that shortly
Another thing I could not find, is the length from tip to tip of antenna when the are turned opposite each other (had thought about printing a stand so I can still mount the hub on it's side, but would need to lift it high enough for the antenna to clear the shelf it is sitting on now. Anyone got the measurements on these dimensions?
However, the search term "C8 Pro" turned up many different ways to purchase in addition to the pictures I was looking to find. Even though I am not necessarily looking to buy, what I scanned was a bit crazy.
For the main webpage on Hubitat direct, the price is $154.95 (US 48 states currently - not sure if that is a sale since we are close to the 4th - but nothing indicates that it is)
Then I saw the images with pricing for ebay and amazon..... All I can say is what are these sellers thinking?
Amazon - not so bad - $179.95 from the Hubitat Store. Not buying from Amazon anyhow - but curious as to why there is a price difference of $25 from the "Hubitat Store" on Amazon vs the official website here. @bobbyD Any ideas on that? Is there added shipping on the Hubitat website that might account for the difference in pricing?
Anyhow.... AND THEN THERE WAS E-bay..... Holy Freaking Cow.... Prices up to almost $400 (USD) for a potentially used C8 Pro with very little assurances you're even getting what you paid for.
Amazon is always pricier that the corresponding “native” store for smart home stuff… Zooz is another good example… Even with paying for shipping, you’ll always pay a lower price at The SmartestHouse vs Amazon for Zooz stuff.
In some cases, I suppose Amazon’s “free” 1- or 2-day (or even same-day) shipping makes Amazon’s premium pricing worth it (assuming you’re a Prime member).
It isn't worth the risk to me. I have read issues where they send returned hubs or similar. I usually prefer to go directly to the source anyhow (more incentive when it's both less expensive and more likely to actually be new)
The only reason I looked was because the prices on the search results were so drastically different on E-bay. (Amazon again wasn't so bad)
Yeah, I agree on the Amazon risk… We buy a pretty regular amount of stuff on Amazon, but I no longer buy anything electronic from them anymore - I’ve gotten burned several with obviously returned non-working junk.
I’ve learned to just live with the shipping wait from whatever more appropriate retailer I get that widget from.
I got my new C8 pro in one day, directly from Hubitat. They beat Amazon on shipping times for that one. It might depend where you live, but Hubitat ships pretty quickly.
I think some of the eBay pricing may be about being willing to sit on product and hope for a very uninformed consumer to happen by and purchase w/out any price research. Agree that it can be crazy on eBay, but I've also seen similar weird/excessive pricing on Amazon.
And re the LED… And again presuming it is the same as the C8… From your measurements image, the wires plug into the top edge of the hub and the LED is on the bottom edge… And yes, I laid down the antenna just for the photo
Lucky for me, my day job is working with the Internation System of Units (SI).
And most 3D printers would have to convert back from imperial to SI anyhow.
So, funny story... our measurement system is really just a conversion of the rest of the world's measurement system. EVERYTHING is defined in SI (what many people refer to as metric) and everything else is just derived from that now.
