C8 Compatibility

I purchased a C8 hub. I did not realize that Iris V1 devices were not compatible. They are compatible with previous Hubitat hubs, so Im not sure why not the C8. Unless someone has a fix, im inclined to return my C8 and say goodbye to Hubitat

I have a C-7 I'll swap with ya.

There's no zigbee 3.0, i.e. current, zigbee coordinator that is compatible with a proprietary protocol that is >15 years old. Iris V1 devices date back to 2009.

While there is undoubtedly a smattering of folks wedded to 15 year old technology, it is not in Hubitat's interest to limit their customer base by catering solely to that small (and shrinking) group. Modern, zigbee 3.0, coordinators cannot be configured to work with these outdated Iris V1 or Alertme devices.

It’s covered on the compatibility list:

Im new to all this. I did basic research and made the mistake of assuming that the C8 would be backwards compatible. I shouldve researched further. Im certainly not going to downgrade to a C7. Does anyone have any recommendations on a brand of hub that will work?

Good luck finding one.

Why would any hub manufacturer limit their capacity to support modern zigbee 3.0 devices by using an older zigbee chipset that supports 15 year-old technology that is no longer supported by its manufacturer (Lowes/Iris)?

I don't think there are or ever were? I think Hubitat was why so many people migrated here after Iris shut down, there were no other alternatives.

I keep my C5 around just for Iris, and for some chatty cloud based integrations, and through Hubmesh share them to my C8. It works fine that way.

You can get a C5 (or even a C7 at times) dirt cheap if you keep your eyes open. There are many C5 on Ebay right now for about $35.

Yes another hub is just one more thing to maintain, but it is not horribly complicated nor oppressive to do so.

Someone beat me to it, but I just purchased two c7's from different people and paid 20 each, one off ebay and one off amazon. The c7's are compatable and can be linked to your existing hub. At that is how I understand it. Someone will correct me if I am mistaken. Welcome and good luck!

You are not mistaken. You can indeed join Iris v1 devices to your C7, and then use Hub Mesh to share them to any other hub, including C8/C8-Pro.

That's what I do, all my old Iris v1 devices are on my C7, shared to C8-Pro. Works a treat. as they say.

Your loss, IMHO...passing on a ton of good stuff w/HE over what is really a minor issue, cheaply solved (per below example):

If you can help me locate a used C7 at a good price, ill buy it. The ones ive seen are alot more expensive than $20

What about a C5? Can i do that hub mesh thing with a C5?

Yes, you can mesh any Hubitat with another. I mentioned directly above I use my C5 for my iris devices.
