C5 zwave stops with only 2 Devices connected

Hey,

Automations were dead - so the Z-Wave radio appeared as though it had failed. I only have a C5 hub (the idea of having to go round and migrate all my Zigbee devices is making me feel sick :sob:) - it does seem like there is an issue with the Z-Wave stick freezing as it was only when the actual device was completely powered down (e.g. power taken out) that the stick came back to life, a soft reset via the Web UI wouldn't cut the power to the stick I'd imagine as it's connected through a USB splitter.

Very true , strange for me It only needed a reboot. Do you have many apps installed ?

I've got about 12 apps installed (most are connectors), but haven't experienced sluggishness that you would get if the Hub was under a lot of pressure - to be honest I only have Z-Wave for some of the legacy devices connected which I haven't replaced (such as underfloor heating thermostats) as I've always found it the least reliable when compared with Zigbee

Don’t suppose you are using the harmony app , MQTT, hub controller or NUPS server ?

These are the apps I've got installed:

Amazon Echo Skill
Device Watchdog
Domoticz Server
Echo Speaks
Groups and Scenes
Hive (Connect)
Homebridge v2
Hubitat Package Manager
Hubitat Dashboard
Hubitat Safety Monitor
Hue Bridge Integration
Maker API
MyNextManager
Neato (Connect)
Notifications
Rebooter
Sonos Integration
ThinQ Integration
webCoRE
Withings Integration

I do have the Logitech Harmony Hub Parent driver installed

Hope that is useful,
Guy

Interesting … the reason I ask is I only have a few apps installed and mostly run the hub with just the essentials. I never really install apps however the last few apps I installed happened to be the harmony app. The zwave network appeared to stop around 12:35/12:40am and at 12:33am the harmony app logged a socket was reset. I wonder if you might be able to check see if anything from the harmony app was logged just before the zwave network stopped ?

Its probably nothing but just checking everything. I have removed the app for now just to see.

I'll take a look - to be honest I actually remembered this happened back in November 2020 (All Zwave devices disappeared after upgrade to 2.2.4.148) seems to be a latent issue

Hi all,

Just reporting back, support came back to me and asked for me to remove an MQTT app installed. I waited a week to see if the hub would stop the zwave device again and it did. I have now removed the MQTT app and will see if it causes the problem again.

I have one question @bobbyD might be able to help with , the zwave stopping has now stopped 4 times and every time it appears to stop on Saturday morning at around 3:30am or about a week after a reboot. Is something running on the hub via a schedule which runs every 7 days ? Like a zwave repair or cleanup or something like that ?

Thanks

There isn’t anything running on weekly basis, however we are aware that some users experience this issue and we hope to have a fix in the next major release (2.2.9).

Ah great can I ask what the problem is ? Maybe I can stop something to prevent it happening . Any chance I can beta test the latest release 2.2.9 or when it might be released ?

There is no work around for this issue, other than rebooting the hub. I added your account to the beta group. I'll PM you more details shortly.

Hi @bobbyD , I have the exact same issue since I have my C5 hub. Z-Wave just stops working every two weeks since I got it 18 months ago, with the blank Z-Wave table as shown in this thread. It comes back online when I unplug the Z-Wave stock and reboot the hub.

I did not mind it much because I had only 2 plugs on Z-Wave, everything else was Zigbee. But now I have all my heat system connected via Z-Wave, and I cannot find it satisfying that I have to manually remove the stick and reboot the hub each time it happens : I'm not always at home to detect it and to repair it.

So is this something software related or do I have to replace the Z-Wave stick which may be broken ?

My C5 has continued to fail about every two weeks. I ran a few tests before rebooting and I can confirm if you pull the zwave stick it will not resolve the problem. If you pull the stick and attempt to disable and enable the zwave module from the menu the hub web interface will fail. The only sure fix is a reboot that I can see at the moment.

I have now tried a soft reset followed by a restore so maybe this might help, will see.
