I've just seen the black Friday deal and tempted to bite...
However how easy is the process of moving from a C4 to C8Pro?
I currently run 2x C4 with hub mesh. One upstairs and one downstairs purely for radio locations and also to keep cloud heavy workloads on the secondary hub to not slow down my main C4.
I could keep the secondary C4 as is and replace the main C4 with the C8 Pro
Looking for opinions etc to see whether I should press go on the purchase button
From a C-4, a lot of the migration is going to be manual. You'll really only be able to use a local database restore rather than the migration tool. But what happens after that depends on what kind of devices you have. Zigbee devices will need to be re-paired, but they'll be recognized as the same device and slide back into place. Aside from that initial pain, it's pretty easy. Z-Wave devices will need to be re-included. You can use Swap Device or the "Replace Device" feature you'll see after inclusion to swap the device out with the "old" one on your hub (if it's a supported device, or you can do it manually if there are child devices involved where this won't work) and then remove the "old" one. which should no longer be referenced by any apps. Some LAN integrations like the Hue Bridge Integration will not require any effort. Some cloud integrations, like Alexa, will.
There are some features that only work on newer hubs, like Matter (C-5 and newer) or HomeKit Controller (C-8 Pro only), and a C-4 is getting pretty old at this point, so I'd probably upgrade when I want to instead of if/when the C-4 stops working and I have to, and future migrations will likely be easier since you'll be on a platform where Zigbee and Z-Wave backup and restore are supported. Just my take on that, though! (And with the extra power of the C-8 Pro, you could probably get down to a single hub if you wanted -- but even a C-5 or newer is likely to perform better than the C-4 with LAN/cloud integrations.)
And. of course, you can also just ignore all of the above and start over if you think you can do things better now. Done that a couple times myself.
That's a nice testament to the build quality & utility of that C4 for you over the years.
It speaks well for what folks should expect on the long term "cost of ownership" of the C8 Pro (that of course ignores the impulse the hub enables to buying every new-fangled end device that pops up).
Thanks for the comments, it's more the WAF I'm going for with this.
Will struggle to find the time to start over unless I use hub mesh with the new one and migrate but by but - that will work won't it?
Aren't there issue with pairing older Zigbee devices to the C8 pro? Like older Iris motion & contact sensors? Like Zigbee 1.4 or something? I want a C8 pro but have alot of older Zigbee tech, mostly Iris motion, contact, flood & Visonic contact
Only the Iris v1 sensors that used a proprietary Zigbee profile (AlertMe, or that might have been the OEM). The v2 devices, probably the most popular, are standard ZHA 1.2, and I think their short-lived v3 devices were standard Zigbee 3.0.
I use a bunch of Iris v2 devices (outlets, motion sensors, contact sensors, leak sensors, temperature & humidity sensors, etc…) with no issues whatsoever on my C8-Pro hub. The C8 & C8-Pro hubs work great with ZHA1.2 and Zigbee 3.0 devices.
I do think something with the zigbee chip in the 8-series is less forgiving than earlier chips...
I did not have good luck with 1.2 stuff when I moved from C7 to C8, but I'll readily admit that was likely either user error or some device-specific issues (or both!)
Fortunately, I only had a few 1.2 devices by that point, so it was easy enough for me to just instead replace them with 3.0 equivalents.
Ogiewon (and many other folks here, I'm sure) are happily running 1.2 stuff on their 8-series hubs, so while I wouldn't contend it's any sort of widespread concern, I would caution folks who are upgrading to 8-series with older ZB devices to maybe just keep an eye out for it.
Thanks Ogiewon, I could have sworn I read that the 1.2 devices migrate fine...BUT if you have to re-pair it often fails. What has been your experience with re-pairing older Zigbee devices?
Same here. I originally migrated around 100 Zigbee devices from a C-5 to the C-8 and only had to rejoin one Iris V2 motion sensor out in the garage. I have zero issues joining Zigbee 1.2 devices, but occasionally have issues joining Zigbee 3.0 devices. Usually, moving closer to a different repeater helps. I find that having a variety of strong Zigbee 3 and 1.2 repeaters helps.
Thank you Aaiyar & @ogiewon . I guess it was meant to be, snagged a C8pro for 109.00 on scamazon(40 coupon). Now of course the C9 max will be relaesed next month
