C-8 Pro unable to include any Z-Wave Long Range devices

Hi everyone,

I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction. I've spent quite a bit of time troubleshooting this and have reached the point where I'm not sure whether I'm looking at a software issue, a hardware issue, or something I've overlooked.

Hub Information

Hub: Hubitat C-8 Pro
Platform Version: 2.5.0.159
Z-Wave Radio Firmware: 7.18.1
Region: US-LR (908.4 / 916 MHz)
LR Channel: B

Device

Zooz ZSE41 800LR
Firmware 2.30
US version

Symptoms

I've never successfully included a Z-Wave Long Range device on this hub.

My conventional Z-Wave mesh is healthy and functioning normally, but every attempt at LR inclusion fails.

The controller log consistently follows this sequence:

SmartStart request received > DSK recognized > "Including SmartStart node using Z-Wave Long Range" > NodeFound > Adding the node failed

The hub clearly sees the device and begins LR inclusion, but the inclusion never completes and no device is created.

What I've Tried:

  • Shut the hub down properly and removed power for 30+ seconds before retrying.
  • Verified the hub and sensor are both running current firmware.
  • Verified the hub is configured for the US LR region.
  • Antenna Test passes with no reported issues.
  • Reviewed my Z-Wave Details page for ghost or incomplete LR nodes and don't see anything that appears related to the failed inclusion.

My Z-Wave network appears to be working normally.

The sensor is located only a few feet from the hub during inclusion, so I don't believe this is an RF range issue.

From the logs, it appears the hub successfully discovers the device but aborts during the LR inclusion process before creating a node.

Has anyone seen this specific "NodeFound" > "Adding the node failed" sequence with LR devices? Are there any known issues with Hubitat 2.5.0.159 or Z-Wave firmware 7.18.1 affecting LR inclusion? Is there anything else worth checking before I open a support ticket?

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

If you upgraded from a C7 or C8 then you have encountered a known S2 bootstrapping issue with no resolution timeframe offered by the Hubitat staff currently. LR will not function until you exclude all of your z-wave devices and reset your z-wave radio. After, include a LR device first or the problem may re-occur. See this thread:

@Trentin Switch to z-waveJS, do a power cycle(not just a reboot), then add via smart start (the only way LR can be added)

@rlithgow1 Unfortunately I’m already on z-waveJS.

@kevin_wilcox Thanks for the link. How disappointing that this is still an issue they can’t seem to fix. I thought I saw in one of the recent updates that they had put out a fix for the LR issue but I must have been mistaken. It almost seems like the easiest (most expensive) option is buying a separate C8 Pro for adding LR devices. I wonder if they’d give us discounts for the extreme inconvenience?

Its a tricky one tmk and appears to be related to the legacy ZIP radio control library that is proprietary to SiLabs. Therefore, I was thinking that we would see this fix in ZwaveJS which is open source.

dumb question. Have you tries switching back to zip then trying to add it?
