The Inovelli White Matter over Thread switches say they are compatible with Hubitat (if you go to the bottom of the Inovelli White page and click on Compatible Platforms. Now that I'm questioning this I see there may be a small asterix after Hubitat...it is so small it is not visible, but there are references below to needing a compatible border router...
I took this to mean the C-8 can run Matter over Thread (also because in this thread @aaiyar
says with the C-8, the user selects either Zigbee or Thread for that radio).
Post by @Sebastien here seems to indicate he is using the new Inovelli White Matter over Thread switches - is this with the Hubitat ONLY?
HOWEVER, in this post, @ogiewon says HE hubs have no local Thread radio.
Matter over thread requires a thread border router like a Homepod
Right now Hubitat is only zigbee.
That said I have several matter over thread devices on my hubitat.
You will need to commission a matter device using apple/google/alexa first then export it to Hubitat. This is because bluetooth is required. Once the app is redone to give access to the bluetooth radio on your phone you will be able to commission directly.
You have to commission it with another device. I added my first matter device a few days ago - a matter over thread outlet. Added to Apple Home then put it in pairing mode on the Home app and added it to Hubitat using the code. Hubitat can only act as a matter controller currently.
The C8/P's "zigbee" chip can be set/used for Thread or Zigbee, but that is not a choice the end-user can make -- it gets baked into hardware as one or the other. Once set, it's not easy (if possible at all) to switch.
I'm quite certain it wasn't aaiyer's intent in that post to imply that the chip would be end-user switchable betw/ zigbee or thread -- I think he's just saying the chip is capable of doing either protocol (which is true).
Early on, it was thought that time-slicing with this chip (concurrently supporting both ZB and Thread) may be possible, but subsequent experience elsewhere proved that just resulted in everything sucking.
The asterisk is really a superscript "6" that refers to the note below, the one that says you need a Thread Border Router. So, your conclusion is correct if that is what you figured.
The C-8 (or any hub) cannot do Thread. That conversation must have been referring to theoretical capabilities of the radio based on radio firmware the hub is not using but that the manufacturer might happen to have. So, the references above to the radio doing only Zigbee are correct.
But one more thing...
I'm not sure why the Inovelli page says "C8 only." There was a (short) time when Matter was supported only on the C-8 and C-8 Pro, so maybe this hasn't been updated since then. I don't even think this device was released yet at that point. Matter works on any hub C-5 or newer, and I'd expect this device to be no exception.
As indicated by @bertabcd1234, that discussion was related to the hardware capabilities of the Zigbee radio in the C-7 vs the C-8. The zigbee hardware in the C-8 is capable of functioning as a thread radio or a zigbee radio. Although Hubitat has not implemented that choice.
