Brilliant out of money

Well, in my mind my notes were a lot more comprehensive than they appear to be now that I've revisited them.. because of the reliability issues I've blamed on rooting them, I'd need to either factory reset and rebuild, or replace these things every couple of months so the process was familiar enough that detailed noes weren't required. The non rooted unit I've been running since last June has't shown any reliability issues (the only time it's even rebooted was caused by a power failure).

There are lots of websites (or used to be; some resources like the "Things That are Smart" Wink Relay wiki no longer seem to exist) and forums that do a great job of explaining the rooting and configuration steps.. one of the most comprehensive is Josh's [Beta] Wink Relay - LAN Integration which covers everything. However running without root privilege prevents that particular app from working, though there is plenty of info there that's still useful.

Still, since Wink's servers no longer seem to bother (or update) the Relay, some of that info no longer is pertinent. In some ways (aside from the lack of potential Android security patches) this makes things better since the Wink apps can be deleted on the unit and don't get automatically reinstalled (previously they'd pop up spontaneously).

Also, there are workarounds and app version issues to be aware because recent browser versions of Chrome and Firefox may not work properly on Android 4.3... the older verions work but not all websites fully support them. So it might be useful to have a thread about what you can do with a non-rooted Relay and what still works with the stock Android version.
