There’s a backstory to how hub backup capabilities came to be. It’s come up in other threads too, here are some examples. While it’s tempting to ascribe it all to corporate greed, etc., that’s probably not the reality of it.
I’m not sure if it helps, but here’s some background info on the history of hub backups. It’s a little hard to summarize briefly, but here goes.
For a while, local backups were the only kind, and they did not include z-wave or zigbee radio information. The exact reasons why are beyond my understanding, but there were technical limitations that required work by the development team to solve. This implies they deliberately held back features from the local backups, when as far as I know, the opposite is true.
If I understand the statements made by staff over time (and it’s possible I don’t), there were technical hurdles that made zigbee/z-wave radio backups difficult or impossible to include in the hub backup process at first.
The solution they eventually came up with apparently relies on the cloud.
