Well, my first encounter with « matter » was a bust. I purchased one of these GE Cync lightbulbs because I wanted a colour bulb to use as an indicator. Could not find cheap Zigbee ones and didn’t want to go to Ikea, so I figured I would try my first « matter » device.
Turns out the product received does not have the Matter logo, nor a Matter QR code, and is not detected at all by Apple HomeKit, so I have no way to pair them to Hubitat (I don’t have Google or Alexa)…
What a disappointment, but at least I can return it easily…
I using my cell phone with the Tapo app as controller then once I have the code for matter I'm using it on a C-8 Hub, also it is my understanding that Hubitat is working on the Hubitat phone app to use that as a controller instead of other app?
I was at Walmart this evening and did see the Cync color bulbs that had the matter logo and then they had some older Cync bulbs that did not have the matter logo. I read the back of the boxes. The non matter bulbs looked to be made in China and the matter bulbs say mad in Cleveland OH.
I purchased the bulbs pictured to test. They seem to work just fine. Although I have to connect them via matter with Google home and then get the activation number from Google to add device via matter to hubitat.
The bulb switches very quickly with my zooz door sensor.
That is how matter currently works with habitat (you can also use Homekit or Alexa). Currently there is no direct way to provision matter to habitat, you need to edge boarder router to complete provisioning.
I believe you’re thinking of Thread. Devices that use thread in a Matter fabric need a thread border router to interact with other devices. But Matter is more than Thread.
Hubitat needs another device to commission new Matter devices like these GE bulbs, since it’s not able to do that on its own.
