I've automated making coffee with a Z-Wave outlet. This meant I needed to buy a "Dumb" Mr. Coffee Drip coffee maker. Anyone know of a better quality dumb switch coffee maker that they think is worth the money to elevate this a bit? Thanks.
I've never seen a point to it. I mean a timer, for sure. I have a cusinart grind and brew DGB-900 coffee maker. Works well. By the time you get done putting in water etc, might as well just hit the timer. JMO
I should have mentioned. I'm retired, so wake up times vary. Me and my wife like to be able to mumble "Alexa, turn on the coffee pot" and while we lay there waking up it's brewing. 13 minutes later we can stumble downstairs to fresh hot coffee. It's a small luxury that makes each morning better. But, because of the need for a "dumb" pot we've had to switch to a $25 Mr. Coffee that drips when you pour it, has illegible numbers on the side and looks like a cheap coffee pot. It's a first world problem for sure, but would like a nicer pot that maybe brews a bit hotter and doesn't look like it came from WalMart for $25...
You can use most of these. To integrate them into HE simply create a virtual switch that triggers an alexa routine.
Thanks. I'll have a look!
For a good grind and brew (I prefer whole bean vs ground)
At least one of these works with Alexa natively. Using virtual switches in HE won't be necessary unless you want to trigger the coffee pot based on something like a motion sensor or something. For voice commands, I'd skip the virtual switch.
Right. That's what I was alluding to.
This coffee maker is awesome. Technivorm KBTS - 8 Cup Thermal Brewer
Proper temperature, great flow over the grounds, etc. Last one you will ever buy.
Wow. It's an elegant machine. Would have to slip that expense by the Mrs.
Thanks for the recommendation. I can see getting that eventually if not now.
We love electric coffee percolators like this one. They are dumb, cheap, and super tasty.
I have this one connected to a zigbee smart outlet and love it. We have it on a week day HE rule timer, but end up overriding it often through Alexa or even the hardware button based on our schedule.
Probably more importantly our time also shuts it off as does our geo-fencing and modes.
This thing is controlled just by simple bi-metalic on/off switch.
In my case the unit switch is permanently set to on position.
Than the control is done by HE RM rules via Zigbee Sengled plugin outlet with power reporting.
You have to get it ready manually but then I have a lot of automation around this toy.
If any interest I can share all my related RM rules.
Intriguing!
Also an interesting choice. Glad to see we're not the only coffee people on here.
FWIW, I use a dumb Mr Coffee. Grind with a good grinder (Kenmore burr) at night, load up the coffee and have a zigbee outlet fire in the morning so I have coffee when I wake up. Is it as good as an Aeropress or similar? No. Is it nice to have coffee first thing with no waiting or work? Damn straight.
What I’m wondering is if there’s anything like better laundry monitor that can see from power usage when the coffee is done. Once the water has been expelled, the heater should cycle “more”. Anyone have any ideas on either RM or another app that could pick this up and say, turn on a light or announce?
Here is the power trend from our machine. I would guess you should be able to use the first cycle with a "sticky trigger" of power over 1000W for at least 30 seconds or even just when plug turns on that is only allowed to run once per day. The first action would likely be a wait for event that waits until power drops below 100W. Then turn on your light or whatever.
Here are few RM rule related to the Coffee Maker I mentioned above.
Coffee Maker switch is always in ON position and never touched.
On/Of control is done by Power Plug with Power Meter capability.
Of course, Coffee Maker must be manually prepared.
Once this is done, the rule "Kitchen CoffeeMaker Ready" is triggered
by pressing one of the related button (there are few around).
When someone is ready to actually brew coffee another button is
pressed. The rest is done by the above RM rules.
This should give you an idea how the think is automated.
Here is an example of Button rules.
Only Button-3 rules are related to the Coffee Maker automation
