This may no longer be relevant since the introduction of the new 700 series Z-Wave chip.

What does efficient mean in this context? Do you mean they detect motion better? Or have a quicker response time?
Have a much quicker response.
This may be because older z-wave motion sensors were designed as security sensors, where eliminating false motion is key, before reporting a motion event.
Modern z-wave+ sensors (even the battery operated ones) and all zigbee motion sensors are lightning quick because they are designed to trigger automations.
That's an interesting thought! Also the routing and mesh capabilities were not quite as good as well. Zigbee still seems to be the fastest but to be fair I have not tested the 700 sensors.
