Hi all. I’ve been away for a while so I’m a bit out of touch. I’m loooking for the best presence sensor (eg. microwave) that is ceiling mounted and ideally flush-mount for nice appearance. I think Zigbee or Matter preferred. I’d like it to run off mains voltage 220v, no batteries. I’m based in Asia so AliExpress works for me.
Any recommendations with reliable Hubitat drivers?
No way the 110/220 v ceiling mount version would be code-compliant in the US, or probably any other civilized country, unless you mounted the sensor in a plate and installed it over a (preferably non-metallic) electrical box.
At least one (but sadly, only one) reviewer recognized this. It's not UL listed, which should be an immediate deal breaker for anything powered with mains voltage.
This sort of thing makes me angry. Stay away from Chinese garbage like this. Nobody involved with the design, manufacture or sales of this junk cares if your house burns down.
I bought one of the ceiling mount versions knowing it wasn't code compliant just to check it out and potentially use in a portable product.
They have exposed bindings. Mine might have been able to fit in a deep old work round junction box. I wouldn't do it though.
The one I had also had an aux relay. Pretty cool. Wish we could get a ceiling mount line level mmwave sensor. Im about to start testing the hue bulb motion stuff. A br30 rgbcct bulb with mmwave in it would be great....
I'm guessing the market just isn't there for such a device. The cost of designing it and obtaining the proper certifications (UL, etc.) is probably prohibitive.
I'd definitely be interested in a ceiling mounted low voltage device though.
Wow, they're brutally expensive and as you said, not even mmwave. I've spent a bit too much on stuff now and then, but that's way out of my league. I'm guessing they're largely used for commercial or institutional installations.
Lots of installs with control4. But yes, higher tier and commercial. The knx versions are popular outside of the US as well. Above doorways to unlock magnetic doors etc is common.
When you consider that a person would install these as part of the house the cost is a pretty small number relatively speaking. Some of my wall switches cost more.
Anyway, wanted to give you an example of low voltage ceiling presence and motion sensors.
The other angle I see people starting to take is 360 cameras doing people counts. Again, not inexpensive and not everyone wants a camera even when it's not recording video.
I have qolsys battery powered pir with mmwave sensors and they work pretty good, but they are on the wall in corners. Not the look I want, but they work. Still not under $100.
