Beginner philips hue questions

Hello,
I got a philips hue lightstrip (white and color ambiance) and paired it directly with hubitat. I do not have a Bridge. A number of threads on the forum are recommending getting a hub and using the native app to control the hub from hubitat.

  1. Is this the recommended approach? I was hoping to just use hubitat and create a bunch of presets to put the light in various states. Is this possible? Where would I create these presets?

  2. When I go to the device page, it's making me pick an RGB value. I realize this is an LED, but is there a way to use sane presets to mimic a 2700K lightbulb? I only want to set color temperature and brightness for now.

Thanks!

Yes, the docs recommend it (or did....I'm not sure what happened to the little notes next to some devices). But (with care) direct to hub can work.

Sounds like you're looking for the "Scenes" feature, which is best done in the Hue app IMHO (another reason to use it), though Hubitat can do something similar a couple different ways. You'll need a community integration to get Hue scenes into Hubitat, as the built-in integration does not support them (CoCoHue, which I wrote, and Advanced Hue are the only two I know of that are currently supported).

What driver are you using? You should have a "Set Color Temperature" command if it's a white and color device, which you'll get if using an "RGBW" driver on Hubitat. If it's color only, the only "RGB" driver is the best choice, and then you'll only have color and not CT commands.

Thank you for the quick reply!

Hmm... the packaging says it's a white and color device but the driver I have is RGB. Changing it to RGBW lets me set the color temperature but it has no effect.

Just ordered a Hue bridge as that seems like the easiest way to get to where I want to be. And it'll also let me add more hue bulbs easily without having to fiddle with settings. Will also checkout CoCoHue once I get the hub up and going.

Good choice... So many reasons to agree with this... You'll come to appreciaete the good choice you have made...

Hit Configure after you change drivers and see if that helps (or just wait until you have it on a Bridge, I suppose).

Configure did change the driver and if I set the color temperature now the lightstrip's color does change but it reverts back to white in 1 second. Probably some driver incompatiblity.

Update: I bought a philips hue bridge. It was quite painful to setup (I have multiple WiFi routers/pucks that are connected to my Ubiquiti switch + UDM SE). The hue app would not detect the bridge, but manually specifying the IP address of the bridge worked.

The lights work pretty well, but I can only seem to pick a color and brightness in the Hue app.

In the bottom left of the screenshot, tap the colour icon (just above the on/off box)

That feels even more complex as I have to select a color from the color wheel. Is there a way to specify a color temperature, or an RGB value?

You can with hubitat. Go to the device and issue either setColorTemperature or setColor commands. the setCT commands work great. setColor is a little bit trickier do to some color conversions between Hue and Hubitat.

Hue bulbs use the hue/saturation/brightness model or xy, the former also being the native color model of Hubitat (likely because of how closely it aligns with Zigbee). So, no conversion in that case, aside from possibly different scaling. The xy model is a different story, but the only bulbs I've seen that only work that way are a small number of third-party bulbs. Hopefully few and far between.

That's fair as I could have worded it a little bit better. @user4071 will probably find the set color/CT commands in hubitat to work for what they want and then it will just be about scheduling through Room Lighting or some other app.

Maybe I misunderstood, I thought you just couldn't find the solour selection. Philips hue are probably targeting a more natural experience where you assess the light in the room to see if it is the effect you want.
