Bed Jet?

Anyone have any luck integrating a BedJet with HE? Wife LOVES hers, I'd like to be able to kick it on before bedtime so the covers are comfy warm in the winter while she showers \ changes for bed.

Well.... You could potentially take apart the control board and find the primary on off button and solder on a dry contact switch. But you'll be dealing with presets, you won't be able to configure anything else through HE.

I cannot help with the how part of this, but I believe it usually it requires an open (or at least accessible) API to do an integration. That would be a good starting point to see if there is such a thing. From there, maybe someone can give some assistance.

I have one, never looked into whether they have an accessible API. I kinda doubt it but :man_shrugging:.

Our bed jets are in the mail. Their website says it’s smart hone compatible. See attached image.

If the website still says a firmware update is coming in 2020, that’s not a great sign…

Just got an update directly from Bedjet.

Thank you for writing in!

We do apologize for the delay in availability in the Alexa skill, we are continuing to develop this for the BedJet 3 and are sorry if there was any confusion on the time frame this would become available.

Since the very early days of development we had the framework of Alexa workable -- we were able to manually force commands to activate a BedJet from an Echo. But we've been hung up on the authentication/security/registration portions of it for more than half a year.

The primary factor is that our BedJet 3 electronics do not have the capacity for running bloated operating systems. Had BedJet 3 been designed with a processor big enough for an operating system like Javascript/Linux, etc, we could have used the many public libraries available for an Alexa integration. For good or bad, our products all use true embedded firmware (in our case C) and there are no neat and easy ways to pull this off for a product that doesn't fit neatly into any of Alexa's categories. Thus our task was much larger than we anticipated and far more complicated than we understood when we launched this campaign. Our outside developer promised they could pull it off and was overconfident. We're still totally committed to pulling smart home off and delivering it and will follow up with an Update when we feel confident it's there.

Please let us know with any other questions!

All the best,
-Nick

Bummer.

I usually assume anything that’s advertised as “coming in a future firmware update” will never actually materialize.

If the product is still worth buying for what it can do when I drop some $$ for it, I’ll do it. If not, no thanks.

Probably why I’ve never been much of a crowdfunder .

A 2022 update from Bedjet.

We originally were working towards an update to allow Alexa capabilities for the BedJet 3 since the initial release in 2019. Unfortunately this has been delayed due to on board memory constraints of the BedJet which does not offer sufficient space for the needed software update. We are now looking at releasing an add-on device to allow this control and will notify owners once this becomes available.

Interesting. Not knowing much about this kind of hardware (and firmware that runs on it too, lol), does that seem like a plausible reason after all this time?

Wonder if they tried for three years then gave up? Or more likely said they were going to look into it for a long time and did only recently?

Another possibility seems like, they’d rather try to sell more hardware and then keep promising additional features. As in, this new add-on device will come with the Alexa skill they’ve been promising for a while, but will also allow for even more stuff “coming soon.”

Never heard of this before. So this is not actually really weird to use? You don't feel like it's "windy" under the covers, and it's quiet enough so that it doesn't annoy?

Ah yes, the old time tested, “it’ll be in the version we want you to buy now”. “Oops, we thought we could do it, but turns out we never tried before we said we could. No worries, we’ll give you 10% off the next cloud based white elephant we produce”!

If you use their overly expensive sheet with two layers so that the air is blowing in between the layers of the sheet, no it’s not exactly breezy under there. If you’re frugal you could stitch two sheets together to get a similar effect.

Otherwise yes it’s kind of like one of those portable a/c exhaust tubes just blowing under your sheets. Not hot air like an exhaust, but it’s definitely windy.

I got tired of mine. I’m hoping the next version of the Eight Sleep mattress pad (which I hear is coming soon, from someone I know that works there, and not in the marketing department lol).

No, not annoying at all. @marktheknife is correct, both the unit and their sheet is expensive, however in 25 years of marriage my wife advertises the BedJet as the best gift I've ever given her, so it was worth it to me. Plus, when hot flashes hit, she just bumps up the airspeed instead of throwing all her covers onto me and overheating me  I dont like it on my side, so the sheet is split and I get no air or heat, but for her, with the phone interface she's able to adjust to stay comfortable, and in the winter she starts it up a few minutes before she gets in bed so it's warm.

It’s worth it for my marriage when the wife is going through the change. At some point I’ll adjust the thermostat up so instead of us cooling the whole floor; baby steps.

It's a bizarre piece of technology. The app only works via Bluetooth, but the unit has wifi. Best part is there is no cloud component, or account. Bad part is there is no cloud component that I can reverse engineer. The only integrations that exist require Bluetooth and if they are connected, then the remote or app can't connect.

That being said, our neighbors sware by it. They don't spend money on much, but when they do, they research it and go for the best.

Apparently someone decided to reverse engineer the Bed Jet Bluetooth LE api and made a quick python program to allow sensor information and allow control of bedjet via home assistant, its been tested with a raspberry pi and a bedjet v3.
