I'm not sure what to make of this with my current Hub Protect Subscription.
I originally got Hub Protect, mainly because it included cloud backups, and I only wanted cloud backups to backup radio data, not so much the cloud feature itself or Hub Protect necessarily.
Then cloud backups was split out of Hub Protect, but I decided to just keep Hub Protect instead of moving to only cloud backups, as I still had a my radio data backups, and I decided it is nice knowing I can get a new hub out of warranty should my hub die, so I didn't go to an only cloud backup subscription instead of Hub Protect.
Now, I would just like to trade my cloud backups for Backup Plus, but only cloud backups are tied to Hub Protect.
Can we get a new Hub Protect subscription option that comes with Backup Plus, instead of cloud backups? Or make that subscription have a choice to use cloud backups or the new local backup plus option?
I just don't feel that I need cloud backups and local backups at the same time if both can save radio data, but I would like to still keep Hub Protect.
I would guess the cloud backup portion of Hub Protect is a small portion of the cost so peeling that out might not make it as much cheaper as you thing (and if that's true likely not worth their time to do).
Not looking for cheaper, just the option to swap out Cloud Backups for Backup Plus in the existing Hub Protect subscription. Or, move to a new Hub Protect subscription that includes Backup Plus instead of Cloud Backups, if that could be a new Hub Protect subscription offering in addition to Backup Plus being a stand-alone subscription like Cloud Backups are now.
If it is cheap to Bundle Backup Plus with current Hub Protect, I might do that, but I just don't feel I still need Cloud Backups if I add Backup Plus.
Yeah, I would take the current Hub Protect price with the swap out, but since it would reduce the cloud infrastructure portion of Hub Protect, it would seem that a Hub Protect with Backup Plus only, should be just a bit cheaper. Probably not enough to matter, though.
Unfortunately, it wouldn’t be. Cloud Backup is included with Hub Protect at no additional cost; the primary factor behind the price is the potential cost of replacing the hub.
Removing Cloud Backup would also reduce the overall value of Hub Protect. A true contingency plan should cover both parts of a hardware failure: replacing the failed hub and restoring the system afterward. The extended warranty provides replacement hardware, while Cloud Backup preserves an off-hub copy of the configuration needed to recover quickly. Together, they provide a more complete protection plan.
It seems that Backup Plus should come at a very small incremental cost to an existing Hub Protect subscription. You are already paying for a full restore stored by Hubitat. The ability to store locally would be a great solution for those with locations that have limited cloud connectivity.
$5 as an add-on to an existing Hub Protect subscription seems reasonable. This wouldn't be a stand alone service but an enhancement to the current capability.
I don't think that would not cover the costs, unfortunately. But we may be able to extend the existing bundle discount to include this service for existing Hub Protect or Remote Admin subscribers, at least as an introductory pricing. The current discount is 50%.
I totally understand that. I wasn't actually looking for anything cheaper. As is, my local backups go right to Google Drive, so they are already in the cloud, and already there and ready to go locally when I need them.
I just can't think of a scenario where I would actually need cloud backups over local, if the radio data is saved locally. However, I would prefer local now that it will be available, instead of cloud backups, but I would need to have both if I add the local subscription.
Edit: I don't see where creating a new "Hub Protect Local" subscription, that comes with Hub Protect Hub Replacements and Backup Plus only, would add any costs to Hubitat, even if it doesn't save anything.
Unfortunately, that's where I have to get off the bus. I am already paying for Hub protect/Cloud Backup. Charging an additional fee to allow me to store my backups locally is not justifiable when there is no additional cost to Hubitat.
No additional cost? What about the cost to program and make available this feature? Hubitat's staff can't live on nothing. While the storage cost is not there, the cost to adapt the system and update the hub's firmware to allow this is not insignificant I would think. "There ain't no such thing as a free lunch!" As I currently understand it, Backup Plus would be available as a stand alone product. The development costs should be absorbed there. For the vast majority of Hub Protect subscribers Backup Plus would be an incremental not necessary but "nice to have." I'm good with five bucks to play with it but don't really need it.
The code to include this in the backup is already implemented as part of the cloud backup. It does not represent an additional on-going, or even one-time, cost to Hubitat.
Further, I am already supporting Hubitat with four copies of Hub Protect / Cloud Backup, so I think allowing me to store my backup locally is entirely reasonable.
Since I am not on the staff of Hubitat, I cannot say what or what not the additional costs were to make this available. I stand by my point that, while the cost may not have been high, nevertheless, there are costs involved. Hubitat staff would need to address this further. You are always free to implement your own local backup if that is what you want but don't want to pay for it.
