Audio Video Receiver that works with Hubitat

Im just starting to research some of this, but im looking for an AVR that might possibly do a few things, First I need to support a few HDMI devices with it, next not sure if its a thing, but I have to run the hdmi over ethernet because its going to be in my basement to my tv thats in my living room on a wall with no wires exposed. These are my main two goals, but if i could get something that works with hubitat that would be even better

There is community support for Denon

Apologies, just jumping in on this .. I have a Denon AVR 3600h . Would you point me to where I can find how Hubitat supports Denon please? Thx

@steve19
Keyword denon in hubitat package manager or create a virtual device and pick the Denon AVR driver

There is a built-in driver for denon AVRs (works with Marantz AVRs too since they're owned by the same parent company as Denon). It's not necessary to use a community-developed driver.

With respect to the OP's needs, when you say "support" a few HDMI devices, do you mean you're going to connect a few HDMI devices to the AVR? Or something more specific? Essentially all modern AVRs will have multiple HDMI inputs these days.

It's also possible to extend HDMI over ethernet, but you'll need to pay attention to the specs for a given extender device. Not all will pass 4K resolution at 60 Hz refresh rate, for example.

In terms of whether or not a receiver "works" with Hubitat, what did you have in mind?

I want to be able to switch HDMI inputs via button press say for example one of my aqara buttons, or voice command which input. The goal is to be able to change the input from upstairs. So press button and then play ps4 on my tv in the living room from my basement.

I don't know anything about avrs right now. Is it possible to use one on two different rooms, for example I'm also making a theater room in the basement will I be able to use it for two separate tvs one in the living room and one in the basement. So then change input of said ps4 from the living room tv to the theater room projector and also go from it being the ps4 to another device say some kind of media player.

Yes this can be done with Hubitat if you select a receiver (with Ethernet or wifi connection) that is compatible. Denon, Marantz and Onkyo have built-in drivers. There might be some other brands that will work with community-developed drivers but I’m not sure.

Do you plan to use either TV’s built-in speakers? Or speakers directly connected to the AVR for both zones (rooms)?

for the living room tv its going to be the built in speakers, for the theatre room it might be other speakers, i havent gotten that far yet with that room. For the AVR are there any that stand out for being good price but also work will with hubitat

I would definitely recommend a surround sound speaker setup in a basement theater room, if possible.

If you won’t be connecting speakers, you may not need a true AVR. Can you outline which devices you have, or are planning to get? That would include source devices like your PS4, or a blu-Ray player, fire TV stick/roku, as well as output devices including TVs, speakers.

Since it sounds like you’re very new to home audio/video in general, you might find articles on Crutchfield’s website to be helpful. They sell AV gear but their help articles can be viewed whether or not you actually purchase from them (although I have in the past, and am very satisfied with them as a retailer).

Here’s one that’s probably relevant for you.

In the basement it will be most likely a projector, with a ps4, Nintendo switch, a Chromecast, a blu ray player, but like I said I'd like to have access to these on the living room tv upstairs as well. So two outputs would be needed. I'm 100% new to the av world haha.

Hi Steven!

I'm a Denon addict so please consider I'm suspect, but I would recommend an AVR like X2700H; it's not the top of Denon line, but it supports multiroom and isn't also the entry line. Please note that so important as the receiver will be your choice of speakers.

I think that the ideal would to go to a shop where you may hear some different setups to define your choice, once the sound is a very personal and subjective preference.

You say multi room. I've been reading in anticipation of finishing my family room and apparently multi room is not supported with native drivers. See this thread:

HEOS is the networked, multi-room audio solution by Denon.

I happen to use HEOS, but it doesn’t sound like it would do much to meet the OP’s needs.

So while most Denon and Marantz AVRs support HEOS, if the goal is to use one AVR to support TV watching and video game use in two rooms, HEOS won’t really come into play.

I would also add the disclaimer that the community developer that wrote a HEOS integration is no longer supporting his Hubitat apps and drivers. So the HEOS integration does work, but it’s always possible some figure change on Denon’s end will render the integration inoperable.
