Is anyone out there using multiple Ubiquiti Access Points with a Zigbee mesh network?
How many access points do you have?
On different channels, or the same channel?
Any interference to a zigbee network?
I'm working on a 4 AP house, and I'd like to have a strong Zigbee mesh.
However, I'm just not sure I can work out the channels so that they don't conflict...
Any suggestions/comments???
Hello. I have 2 x in-wall-hd Ubiquiti access points with roughly 40 WiFi endpoints. I also operate a Zigbee network on channel 20 that at the moment contains 28 Zigbee devices and I don't experience any issues.
Anyways hope that helps.
EDIT: I also have 13 RF devices integrated into HE via the bondhome.io unit so that's another signal being blasted around the house
I'm sure you've seen this widely-circulated comparison of Zigbee and Wi-Fi channels, but if not, here you go: ZigBee and WiFi Coexistence — MetaGeek
The general recommendation is to avoid directly-overlapping frequencies (so if you have two Wi-Fi APs on channels 6 and 11, Zigbee channels from about 16-19 and 21-24 are probably not the best). However, most Zigbee channels still overlap the sidebands of these Wi-Fi channels, and that widely-circulated chart only shows you Wi-Fi channels 1, 6, and 11 (perhaps popular choices because this minimizes channel overlap on Wi-Fi, but not a guarantee that these are what you--or your neighbors--are using).
Zigbee and Wi-Fi are both supposed to perform "clear channel assessment" before transmitting to avoid the kind of problem you describe, but I'd still try to maximize distance between at least the central frequencies of each channel if your setup allows (I mostly just try to avoid operating multiple Zigbee networks on the same channel, easy unless you have dozens; to be honest, I care more about my Zigbee network than my Wi-Fi). This could be bad advice. I'm not a network engineer, just repeating what other people (some of whom used to be) told me.
Have two here with USG and still trying to figure out if they’re interfering, but my WiFi is solid, Zigbee not too much. Although I do think that’s Zigbee that’s at fault after many hours studying via Xbees.
I keep my WiFi channels the same, just to keep other channels free, and my Hue on 11 and HE on 20.
I use 3 here, with USG. My wifi is rock solid, but and my zigbee is mostly good.
Thanks for the reply.
So, If you have HE (and your Zigbee mesh network) on 20, do you have your AP's on channel 1?
(to minimize interference)?
Also, any issues with your AP's overlapping channels?
I have three APs on WiFi channel 1 and my Zigbee is on channel 20. My WiFi and my Zigbee mesh are solid and I don’t have any complaints there. All I would recommend is to keep the Hub and the AP a few feet apart, don’t set them up right next to each other.
As @bertabcd1234 already said, both protocols are supposed to stay clear from each other. In my opinion, the impact of interference of the two gets often overstated. There are many many other items that cause much more interference than an overlap of WiFi and Zigbee, e.g. inductive loads close by, microwave close by, etc.
Yeah no issues, as @dan.t says above. I can also see most of my neighbours are also on channel 1. Maybe I'm hypersensitive on the channels due to haveing Hue, and also a good few Xiaomi devices. But they are playing nicely together.
I have three Unifi AP’s on different channels and ZigBee OK except when close to one of the APs as expected. I’m going to try moving the APs onto just two channels.
You can also help your cause by ensuring that the channel width for the Ubiquiti devices are set to 20 at least on the 2.4 GHz side .
I'm somewhat unfamiliar with ubiquiti, but others here have stated that they have all their AP's on one channel.
I'm assuming that individual devices select the right AP, by picking up just the one that has the highest strength.
This sounds like a good plan - I think that I'm going to go with it.
Good point.
Thanks for the suggestion.
Three
1, 6, and 11
There is always SOME interference, as the "tails" of the channels spill over. I would say that my zigbee devices (on channels 15 and 20) seem to be working as expected. Of course I also have many repeaters (5 on each network), so my signals don't have to go THAT far.
Yes, do that - unless you have a real, documented need for wider channels. More <> better when it comes to wireless bandwidth use.
I have two Unifi AP-AC-Pro access points and I'm using Zigbee channel 20. I have not seen any signs of interference. Around 35 Zigbee devices . . .
I have two Unifi AP-AC Pro's on channels 1 and 11 with channel width at 20. I have 57 Zigbee devices on Zigbee channel 19 and a Hue bridge on channel 25 with several lights. Everything is working fine for me.
channel 25 on zig, 2 unifi LR AP's at opposite ends of house on channels 1 & 6, no zigbee interference
about 100 zigbee devices, most all on my C4 hub, a couple on the C5 Hub
