Any Bets on When Battery Dies?

It was a dumb moment. I cancelled all that :joy: I’m going with remote controlled battery powered LED candles now and control with a battery (or powerbank) powered IR blaster. There were some cute lamps with nice lighting effects but alas, I must settle for candles.

Thanks! I got the Broadlink App set up and now I just need to integrate to Hubitat but man, the only spot that consistently works in this small powder room is above the door frame somehow stuck to the door frame like below. I’ll have to look up ways to do that. Also, it 100% works with a powerbank so I’m going to get that tiny powerbank you linked!

May replace this once the Tuya one comes in.

I'm impressed at how quickly this responds. It's pretty much at the exact same time as my Z-Wave switch even tho they're separate motion rules. The ceiling fan lights in the guest bedrooms respond so much slower with a noticeable delay. I wonder if that's because of RF or the Bond Home Bridge. Either way, I'm pretty happy with this Broadlink Mini! Thanks again! I just have to figure out how to stick this on the door frame lol

Unlock Device:

You need to go into the Broadlink App, and click on the Device, Press the "..." in the upper corner, and choose Property from the dropdown.. Move the switch to turn off the cloud lock so it can be used locally.

Then in that same menu, you can click on Device Info to get the IP address of the device, which you need to know for the Hubitat integration.

With the Zigbee Blaster, you won't need to connect it anywhere else first with an app, you just connect it directly to the hub with add Zigbee device, and use the custom driver after.

What is behind that shelf? I ask because maybe you have power behind it you could leverage?

Another door haha. The shelf is a Murphy door for all our guns.

Very cool, could you possibly use POE and an adapter for the broadlink? That's what I do. Also maybe one of those outlets with USB power built in and a very short microUSB cable. That's how I hooked up my Tuya radar motion sensor. Use an outlet shelf faceplate or 3d print one

It’s a powder room so there’s no Ethernet cable and the only outlet is right about the sink. I’d have to run the cable all around the room to the spot it needs to be (top of the door frame). It’s an awkward small room and that was the only spot i could find that consistently would reach the LED candles. Someone linked a battery powered Zigbee Tuya IR controller that I may try as well but it takes a bit to reach from AliExpress.

do you know of any powerbanks that is always on? The powerbank I got seems to shut off when the broadlink doesn't draw any power or draws too little :frowning: I'm going to try charging it in the in/out USB-C port and see if it still has the issue. Some powerbanks have a trickle mode when plugged into the in/out port.

Edit: So, the powerbank I got has a built-in flashlight thing to help you find things in the dark... I could try just turning that thing on indefinitely and sticking an electrical tape on it lol...

I see there is such a thing, but they seem very pricy, like this one.

I have been able to use the ones I have for trickle charging. My only issue with power banks is using it for devices with batteries, as if you leave them plugged in they charge to full, the power bank turns off, and then it never start charging again.

Zigbee is a very low power protocol, maybe too low power in this case. I would try a usb c to c cable using the USB C port, as you said you were going to try. Other than that, maybe some other very low power device, like a USB dongle from an old wireless mouse or something would be enough. Even an old USB thumb drive might be enough to keep it on.

Oh thank for the old mouse usb tip! I’ll try that now. Ugh at that price, I’ll probably just wait for the Zigbee Battery Powered Tuya :frowning: But, in the meantime I’m just going to try to increase the load on the power bank with the tiniest things. Do you think a Zigbee repeater is worth trying?

Thanks for recommendation on the old usb mouse receiver! That worked like a charm

You're all set now, but I just had a flashback to Ralph Kramden's glow-in-the-dark wallpaper concept, as cited by his wife, Alice, along with his other concept, low-cal pizza.

I've never experimented with glow-in-dark paint, but if it can get recharged during the day, it's an idea. Of course, you couldn't shut it off.

My concept, original as far as I can tell, is reflective exterior house Christmas decorations. After installation, all you would need would be passing cars' headlights. Think of the planet-saving possibilities, with no electricity required. But, that's a subject for another thread.
