Alexa thinks Dome Water Shut-off is a light switch?

This morning, in a tired haze, I asked Alexa to turn on my lamp. She somehow heard "turn off all the lights" and she proceeded to turn off all the lights in the house, and our Dome water shut-off (while my wife was in the shower). Luckily I have it set to alert when it turns the water off, so I was able to turn it back on quickly.

Alexa sees it as a "switch". Is there any way to change this, in hubitat, so Alexa knows it isn't a light?

You change it in the Alexa app.

Under devices, choose the device. Gear icon to change settings. Device type.

In my experience Alexa doesn't care what it is, she turns it off. I had to move my FireTV Cube and TV into a separate group from the lights otherwise turn on/off the lights would also turn on or off the TV! Same goes with the ceiling Fan. Even though they advertise it as turning only the lights on/off it does not actually work. I figured complaining to amazon was about as worthwhile and yelling at a brick wall.

Also, I would advise against putting the water shut off on Alexa anyway. Have the control for it on a Hubitat Dashboard you can get to in the off chance it turns itself off due to a leak and you want to turn it on again. I only send the devices I want to use voice control with to Alexa, keeps her from doing bad things.

Strangely it was already set up like this, but she still turned it off.

This is probably a good idea, thanks.

Very strange. I've only found she does that if the title of the device matches close enough, OR you have Hunches enabled. If you do, you'll want to disable Hunches.

My experience is that same as @jtp10181. And I would recommend keeping it off Alexa as well. Much more reliable to control it via a Dashboard or Apple Home (if you use Homebridge/HomeKit).

In addition to the recommendations from @aaiyar and @jtp10181 (with which I wholeheartedly agree) you can stop that annoying Alexa behavior by ensuring that all your Alexa devices are in an Alexa group. If you say to Alexa "turn on / off the lights" she will turn on or off all the lights in whatever group she's in. If she is not in any group then she turns on or off all the lights she knows about. I have Alexa groups for each room and an Alexa in (almost) each room. I have no Alexas roaming roomless. So the worse that happens is Alexa will unexpectedly turn on or off all the lights in that room, never the whole house.

I would think your wife would have alerted you pretty much instantly  (Speaking from experience.)

Try saying “Alexa, turn off All lights.” Key word being “ALL” :sunglasses:

I am pretty sure Alexa will ignore the “room assignments” and will attempt to control every light in the house.

If you leave out the word ALL, she will behave as you’ve described above. I use that feature regularly and it works very well.

And when the lights in your hallway that are abbreviated “Hall lights”, Alexa has a field day shutting all kinds of stuff off.
