Advice for using Button Controllers and dimmers?

Hub model C7, current platform ( 2.4.3.158)

Hi all! It's been a while since I've done anything with my Hubitat setup, but I'm about to do something complicated and wanted input before I start the likely head-pounding.

In my basement rec-room, there are two large areas with the ceiling recessed by about a foot compared to the rest of the ceiling. We have LED strips attached to the bottom ledges of these areas pointing upward, providing indirect lighting.

I currently have three types of LED strips (WW, CW, and RGB) attached to two Mi.Light controllers, run by two of their wall panels and a remote control, with the whole thing turned on and off with a Caseta switch. It's flexible (can make LOTS of different colors mixing whites with RGB) but that feature never gets used, and it control the two sides separately, a feature that does get used a lot. It's also overly complicated and can't be automated except to turn it on and off.

And, only half of it works now because one of the Mi.Light controllers released its magic smoke and no longer responds to commands.

My new plan is to:

  • Replace the three types of strips with one strip of the new wide, high brightness type. (This project uses about 20 meters of the stuff.)

  • Replace the Mi.Light controllers with a single Zigbee controller that handles WW + CW balance.

  • Use WW for one area and CW for the other, so I can control them separately (like I can now) but only for brightness.

  • Use the color balance to control which side is lit - Cool white will turn on one side, Warm will turn on the other, and neutral will turn on both sides.

  • Ideally, use one of my Picos to control brightness and use its center-button to switch between “color modes”.

Does anyone reading this have any experience using the various Button Controller apps (I have Button Controller, Basic Button Controller, and Dimmer Button Controller installed - are there any others?) who might have some advice before I gear up and start climbing this learning cliff? Like I said, it has been a few years since I've done anything with Hubitat so I have a lot to (re)learn.

More importantly, is it feasible, or am I going to hit a wall and realize I need two Picos and two dimmer controllers because my color balance idea won't work?

Any advice would be appreciated!

I think your idea would work - single controller with one strip on the WW and another on the CW, but personally, I would just get 2 controllers…

I have just installed 10 of these (5-in-1):

GLEDOPTO GL-C-201P/202P/203P 5 in 1 ZigBee 3.0 Pro+ LED Controller RGB CCT RGBW RGBCCT Strip Light Smart APP... https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005008554319757.html?channel=twinner

Some of the controllers were a bit finicky to pair for some reason, but others setup on the first try. After they got reset (long story…), they were super easy to pair again.

I also purchased multiple rolls of RGB-CCT strips and we’re very happy with the end result.

CRAP! I've just discovered the first problem, fortunately before doing the physical work. I already orded the same Gledopto device (from Amazon) as the link you sent. But according to the info in your link, it balances WW and CW so it will only provide 50% power to each if the color temp is in the middle.

I think I'll have to do two of them and find a way to coordinate them.

Ah, true! Using the RGB Chanels should work however… Might require a custom driver to make it work the way you want though…
