I have a friend that has an ADT alarm system he is phasing out. I am putting in some HE stuff. There is an existing ADT outdoor Siren/Strobe. I'm pretty sure it can't be connected to HE directly, but wondering if there is a hack that can maybe use a relay to trigger it. I haven't opened it up yet as it is mounted on the eave. Here's a pic. Just wondered if anyone else might have looked into it.
Either tie into the siren trigger at the alarm system directly using Envisalink or Konnected or set up a relay/contact that is powered by the power that is provided to the Strobe when the alarm is triggered and use that as your input to HE.
I don't need HE to know when it's triggered. I need HE to trigger it. I can set up a smart relay to use to trigger it, just don't know if there is anyway to wire it into the unit.
Main reason I asked is to see if anyone else had done it. But if I can get it down, open it up maybe I can figure it out.
I understand and have done it. All you have to do is to set up a relay that provides power to the strobe in parallel with the relay that triggers it from your security box. This secondary relay can be controlled by HE to “light up” your strobe (any Zigbee relay will work, mine is a Sonoff but there are several available on Amazon and all are very inexpensive). I have mine also linked to Alexa via HE so I can also voice control the strobe on and off so that I can easily turn it on if I need to identify the house more easily for guests/emergency personnel. You do not need to take it down or open it up if you can trace the power wires to your security cabinet and wire it from there (if the installer did even a half-way reasonable job everything should be labelled at the cabinet). BTW in my setup, I did open up the box when I did the install because I wanted to be able to control the speaker/siren separately from the strobe light.
Seems a shame to abandon the system.
Can't the master code be obtained somehow?
First off, it’s a wireless system. The outdoor siren/strobe is battery powered and wireless.
He is paying way too much per month to ADT for not really needing the features. He still wants an outside siren and I just think it would be nice to use that one. I’ll take it down next time I’m up there and open it up. Maybe I can find a place to wire in a relay contact.
“First off, it’s a wireless system” LOL. First off, perhaps you could have mentioned this (first off) as this is CRITICAL information for people that are just trying to help you out
I guess I assumed from the picture that if anyone had done it before they would know what it was. Obviously no one else has, so question answered.
