Access Hubitat (and home network) via Unifi Travel Router

I wonder how many they sold this morning? I assume they have their manufacturer running hard to make more...

I mean, if you don't feel like doing VPN directly from your PC.

Since I have a unifi gateway and APs at home, I like that I can essentially clone a home SSID and when I take the travel router on vacation, my phone and my family’s WiFi clients will connect through the travel router without skipping a beat.

No need to keep managing SSIDs for each client. The gl.inet routers can do most of the same things but a travel router that lives within the unifi interface definitely has some advantages.

More expensive but well worth the investment as can do so many things including always connected to your home (as long as you have internet access) no matter where you go:

Agree, just try to get five family members to all understand and use VPNs from their laptops, phones, and tablets. My experience trying that on one trip was not fun...

This. ^^^^

Plus, admittedly, in part it's a new toy.

Mine arrives on Jan 3...others?

Going to connect it to a hotspot from my phone at a local coffee shop so I can "call home."

Mine is scheduled to arrive on Jan 2nd

You're first!? Damn you, and your little router, too!!

So, I use the afore mentioned Firewalla with Wireguard and the Glinet router with my home SSID that uses wireguard to connect to my home network.

When NOT on the travel router, I use Tasker (android) to auto toggle the wireguard VPN when not connected to our "safe" SSID (this includes over cell network). Cloned the tasks, and shared with the family phones and tablets. I also created a task that puts a button on the home screen so we can toggle it off if needed (Like when the home network loses internet). The only thing I had to teach the family was to click the toggle button to disable/re-enable when needed (only for outages at the house).

Yeah, I have a GLiNet Beryl and use Tasker and have done much the same, but have had issues w/ captive portals (we'll see how that goes w/the Unifi in real life), have had issues w/family members screwing things up after I've set them up. I also like the slim, pocketable size which will allow me to throw it in my small belt-pack.

Plus, as I've already noted, it's a new toy, and for $79 how can I resist?

WireGuard client has a built in feature to Auto turn on when not on any listed SSID that you add e.g when i leave home and no longer in home wifi range my iphone auto enables WireGuard and connects to home. I have sufficient upload bandwidth at home to accommodate this and once connected to home the device has some other obfuscation rules applied from the Firewalla unit like Unbound over vpn etc. If it is not desirable to configure each family member in this way you can purchase another smaller firewalla unit (purple model) for use as a travel router and for all family members to connect to wifi SSID or any other suitable device capable of running vpn client and broadcasting share SSID.
p.s also allows constant access to hubitat/cameras/media etc management from abroad

Not on Android, and we are an Android house (except for my son's wife, but we forgave her and bring her on vacations as well. )

Slightly tangential to the topic. Ubiquiti Nano Station and an AirCube AC for an RV network. I've done a version of this for approx six or seven years and it works very well. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WGLwwREDzNQ

Doesn't WG Tunnel provide this functionality for Android and i believe supports both Wireguard and AMnezia WG:

Hadn't seen that...thanks for pointing it out.

I have only been running the "official" clients off the Wireguard site, thinking they are the most stable/reliable, and have the features I need at this point.

And as noted above...

I just have to share:

One time at a friends house, and my wife was unable to cast to their TV (on a non-santioned Wi-Fi so Tasker had faithfully fired up WireGuard). Friend was a little bit more techie, noticed Wireguard and told my wife to uninstall it. She did so and never told me, as we traveled around w/me always blithely saying "Sure, connect, you're protected." EEK! . Another time son's GF disabled WG on her phone when she saw it after not noticing it for a while. She didn't remember my son had installed it for her and thought "It looked suspicious." Good for her being careful, I guess...

So I want a solution w/no moving parts other than me (who presumably, I can keep an eye on 24/7).

Not sure what will fit this requirement when using LTE services, WIFI you can get travel router to cover hotel/accommodation but unless your going to carry a portable battery to power travel router in your backpack so all family can remain connected to wifi that you share to travel router from your CELL phone you may need alternatives (app lockdown for VPN client?) or increased education.

We buy eSims if we're going to be outside of our covered roaming countries. We have a relatively broad plan so we're almost always roaming, and don't generally use local wi-fi when we're traveling, except at our lodgings. We're good.

Oh, and if my wife ever found out I locked an app on her phone or tried to tell her what she can and can't uninstall... [shudder]

OK so travel router is not much use then, and looks like your back to client config >VPN service or > Home based Firewalla unit

Is my wife conspiring with you to keep me from buying any new toys?

I think opposite, i have suggested a more capable and function firewalla home unit + firewalla travel unit, but your wife may not approve addition expense
