Without one of those safety certifications, I would pass on any device that’s intended to be hardwired.

That's why I didn't order one. I couldn't find any certification.

I am considering buying one, but not putting a load through it. It seems like it should be mostly harmless as just a button controller? And running it at 120V instead of 240V probably will help as well.

Most probable problem may happen with the built-in device power supply. From the other side, load control is a relay. It also may fail but will not create a BIG disaster such as burning internal PS.

Mine still sits in the drawer; I didn't have the time to modify the wall junction box (I need to pull a neutral wire there).

Probably @joaomf has a better practical experience?
