I have a C8 controller and one Yale Assure Touch 2 z-wave lock. I'm looking to get another 3 locks but they are expensive. I've found some Yale Pro locks with 500 series module. Is there any reason to not buy them? I'm more concerned with them functioning properly than with security protocols etc as we all know anyone that wants to get in... Will.
Every Zwave generation has provided various improvements with the radio that are not just about security. That said with Zwave 500, i believe S2 security was optional where as it was required with Zwave 700 and above.
The reason you would want S2 isn't exactly about security even though it is better. It is more about the way S2 works over S0. Simply put S0 is considerably more chatty then S2. It doesn't take many S0 devices to cuase load issues on your Zwave network. Once that happens every zwave device on the Zwave network suffers.
For just a few locks it probably isn't impactful, but as you add more to the zwave network it can become a issue.
True, but we don't need to leave our doors unlocked. Most breakins are because of opportunity. Let the device pair with S0 or S2 and secure the hub so it atleast take some effort to get in.
Arenโt all breakins the consequence of opportunity?
Anyway, when Jo Rhett frequented this community, he claimed on many occasions that zwave protocol liabilities were exploited using listening devices placed by gardeners in multi-million heists.
Kwikset and Schlage 500's, 300's don't even bother. Now if they we're paired with the C5 it seems to move with migration fine, but pairing direct seems to have issues. (again anecdotal). I have 700's which don't have a problem with anything.
I have one Yale with the ZW2 module (500 series), works great. I think its the green yale zwave module, not sure if you can verify if they come with the ZW2? It pairs with S0 security which is not ideal but a lock is not a chatty device so it really does not cause a problem.
A newer 700/800 module might get you a little better battery life, and the option to pair as Long Range possibly, but that's about it.
I run a Yale YRD256. Works good on the old z-wave. On ZWJS if I list the stored codes it goes into a looping error. The lock itself works as a lock though. The same thing happens on the Kwikset 912. Both have the 500 z-wave. Once that error loop starts the only way out is to reboot the hub. I have not been able to determine if it is the 500 chip set, firmware, or the driver. Generic Z-wave lock.
They are working on Zwave JS fixes right now in beta, you should start a new thread and tag bcopeland. (Post in feedback section if you are not in beta). The issue is almost certainly just ZWave JS itself, nothing you mentioned. The reports from the device are probably being mangled and not coming in correctly.
@anthonyrollo this should not be a concern, it will be fixed eventually and you can stay running the legacy gateway ZIP where they work fine.
