Almost seems like either an under voltage issue or overheating the way the processer is functioning. Could be some tiny component on the board that went bad and its impacting the CPU.

I also feel that you are correct that something hardware wise (on the board) is causing the issue. I've kind of felt that all along but didn't have proof of it. I think the clean soft reset proved that point.
