Hi All,
New to Hubitat, just migrated fresh from ST last week. Nice to see a lot of familiar faces on these forums. First, have to say that I am impressed with the speed and reliability of Hubitat. Presence notifications haven't missed a beat. Lights were pretty stable and rules worked well. Was working through some general newness and a few quarks when yesterday morning noticed that I couldn't control some devices either from voice commands or from the devices page.
I've got about 17 zwave devices, hardly any at all really but most are 4-5 years old. Most paired with s0 security or none at all. I have the Zooz Q sensor that paired s2 unauthenticated.
I did various zwave repairs on the devices themselves yesterday and a few whole zwave repairs before letting things settle down yesterday afternoon. Some lights were intermittent and would trigger then not trigger. Then I noticed that after the zwave repair I had four devices come back as failed and couldn't be controlled. That stayed constant. Those devices are the two Aeon smart switch 6s and two Aeon Smart Strips. Both using the community device driver. Also noticed last night in the middle of all of this one of my albeit older Fibaro motion sensors is stuck in active and draining the battery. I found and switched it to the community enhanced driver last night, but I do not think the changes updated. I'm guessing I might need a zwave stick and add it as insecure?
Anyway ... I'm looking for some advice on how to overcome. I think I have to replace those devices? I do have some newer devices that should be here this weekend that should help my mesh. Expecting an Inovelli on/off in wall switch, GE enbrighten plug and an aeon repeater ver 7. But for now, I'm thinking of removing the failed devices and trying to re-add them back as those apparently were the backbone of my mesh.
I am using @tony.fleisher wonderful zwave mesh details, thank you, it's been such a help!
Any advice appreciated on how to overcome this hurdle. Thanks!!
Well, first do you have any zooz 4-in-1 sensors in your mesh? If so remove them and re pair them without security. If most of your stuff is paired at s0 re pair them with none. The only things at this point that should be paired with security are locks, leave everything else at none. Now back to the zooz. The zooz has a known issue with being overly chatty with s0 and will crash a mesh like a drunk fratboy at a party. If you look at the compatibility list there are a few things on there that say compatible with c5 but not c7. S0 is chatty has hell and honestly should just not be used but given the zwave 700 specifications and lack of enforcement on z 500 it's caused issues. Start there and see how your mesh is after
Welcome!
Assuming that most of your Zwave devices are not the Plus version given the 4-5 years. Unlike ST, HE doesn't poll bey default so their status may not be current, so you may need to either:
- Tell the rules to turn on/off without regard to the status
or
- Add the polling app and poll those devices
On the Fibaro, assuming you hit configure, you may want to pull its battery for about a minute and then pop it back in to see if it gets the new configuration.
HE seems to want a few more repeaters than ST needed, so good call on planning to add them. Inovelli have been solid switches/dimmers for me...
If you can share some details on the make and model of the devices, there might be some more specific advice that could be provided.
In general, the first things I would look at:
- How many mains powered devices are z-wave plus vs. older legacy z-wave? (z-wave plus have command class 0x5E, so it is easy to pick out) If you are looking to replace devices I would start with any repeaters that aren't z-wave plus.
- If any of the devices have energy metering/reporting, turn the frequency down as much as possible to avoid too much chatter.
- It is always recommended after rebuilding the mesh to give it a couple days to see if things settle down.
Thank you all for the advice.
@rlithgow1 I took out my one Zooz 4-1 sensor a month ago and replaced it with the Zooz Q sensor. I think I also need to pick up a Zstick to add some of these devices back with no security. I saw a ton of chattiness on the network.
@thebearmay Hi! I was building in on/off to my rules using motion, but I suspect the polling app is a better way to do this. Yeah I did hit configure but I'm thinking with the state of my network, it didn't take. I ended up pulling that Fibaro off the network and excluding it. Also pulled off one of the two Aeon smartstrips.
@tony.fleisher I have two powered devices (Aeon Smart Switch 6) that are zwave plus and the other two are old Aeon SmartStrips that are zwave. These all are the devices that are showing as failed and I cannot control. I've taken these off the network and will let things be for a few hours before I start adding them back.
The rest of my devices are Aeon window / door sensor 6 (5), Fibaro Motion sensors (3), Zooz Q sensor (1), Aeon Smartstrips (2), Aeon Smart Switch 6 (2)
As a test, you may want to try moving a failed device and the hub closer together, if that makes the device work then may just need to add a few more repeaters.

That was the first thing I tried yesterday ... no bueno
Have you tried a factorry reset on the device? Also do you see any ghosts in your z-wave table?
Have you tried a factory reset on the device? Also do you see any ghosts in your z-wave table?
Yeah I factory reset the devices when I moved them over from ST. No ghosts in my z-wave table, until I tried to add a third Aeon Smartstrip yesterday morning. Got it removed; no issues.
The four devices I removed today morning, I also factory reset. Now that they've been off the network for 2-2.5 hours, everything is responsive again. The door sensors are reporting open/closed. The Zooz Q sensor is reporting on motion and turning on lights, same with the other two Fibaro sensors, both reporting and turning on lights. My lights are all philips hue, so that has had no issues.
I think I'm going to leave these devices off the network for the next few days. I'm looking into replacing the Aeon Smartstrips with the Zooz zwave plus ones. After I put in a few more repeaters and wired/plug in devices, I'll add back the Aeon Smart Switches (also zwave plus).
Hopefully this will be all cleared up by early next week.
Be aware, the zooz plugs have also have also been reported as having the s0 bug. You may want to look into zigbee for that... (or some ge enbrighten outlets)
ah darn it. I'm not aware of any smart strip (5 outlets) other than the Aeon and Zooz. I use it to automate the entertainment stuff.
Ahh, I don't know if the 5 outlet suffers from the issue, I know the single ones do. That said, if you have an extra z-wave stick lying around you can ■■■ all the zooz stuff in as no security and it will play nice.
Not sure what "s0 bug" you refer to, but the Zooz Zen20 ver 2.0 S2 Power Strip is a S2 capable device and I have not had any problems with mine. As with most S2 devices, you can choose what security (or None) to use when joining.
I amended myself when seeing he was talking about the strip. I was referring to the s0 pairing issue with the zooz 4-in-1 and a version of one of their older outlets causing too much chattiness.
Thanks @rlithgow1 yeah I'm ordering the zwave stick from Aeon Labs. That appears to be a necessary piece of kit for this c7 system. Although I'm torn if I should upgrade the Aeon Strips to the Zooz ones, difference being zwave vs zwave plus, and the Aeons pair with none for security. Will see.
Right now things are still stable after removing those fours devices, so those seem to be the chatty ones. All I have left are zwave plus Aeon door / window sensors. They are joined s0 but I'm not seeing chattiness in the logs.
Maybe it's worth upgrading the Aeon Smart Switches to something else ... Any ideas on a single outlet? Maybe more GE Enbrightens?
This is the network now with no repeaters (waiting until some of the new devices show up to re-added everything back in)
I know I said I was going to wait until the new devices show up, but I couldn't help myself, lol. I excluded and included the Living Room Right Window sensor back into the fold and made sure the charge was at 100% before doing so.
I was able to include it back to the hub using security as none and it picked up the Generic zwave contact sensor driver and I updated it to use the Generic zwave plus driver. So I'll let that settle in and see how that works.
