ZWave exclude

NOOB question.

On ST if i wanted to remove a device i had good luck with removing the device from the IDE and then after that doing an exclude.

On HE should I remove first, then exclude or JUST exclude?

I am having trouble excluding a zwave dimmer by just activating exclude.

Exclude, go to the device on HE and at the bottom you will see remove device red button, it will open a window that will put the hub in exclude mode, try to exclude the device in that window, the window will disappear when the exclude has happened. You can have a second window with the logs open and you can see if the exclusion went correctly. Do not delete the device forcing it, it will create a ghost node.

Thanks ill try that when i get home, i was going to zwave settings and hitting exclude and a green banner comes up for 30 seconds, but nothing was happening and didnt see anything in the logs.

We call that "general exclude" because it's not device specific. It's used most often when you're moving a device from another hub/controller. What you will see in the log is "Unknown device was excluded".

If the device was already Joined to Hubitat, you'll want to use the device specific variety from the device page, as described by @vjv

Thanks, yes it is currently in use in hubitat. I'll try that method

Will the log show anything when the exclsion mode is activated? Or only when the device is successfully excluded?

Im having trouble getting it excluded

I don't remember seeing any "exclusion started" message in the logs. Just the one at the end of an exclusion.
