Zwave device connect on C8

Hopefully this is a quick zwave question. I have an Aeotec AerQ zwave temp sensor that connects with S2 security. A home assistant user claims if you connect AerQ without S2 security more features are available. I want it to update more frequently then once every 15 minutes which you can do if you connect without S2 security.

Any ideas how to connect without S2? I've tried a few ways but it doesn't change the connection. Same result each time.

I have never seen/heard of a device where S2 or non-S2 connection affects available features...those are determined by the combination of drivers and firmware. If the AerQ is somehow different, then you can choose not to connect w/security during the Z-Wave join process.

There are some Z-Wave messaging differences when using S2, but they aren't what I would call user features, you can't select or use them yourself.

There is a point where you are offered to join w/or w/out S2.

S2 itself won't open (or restrict) any add'l features for the aerQ or any other ZW device. S2's primary thing is better security, but that's not actually necessary in most circumstances.

One advantage to S2 is better error-checking, so that can be nice for battery devices (especially far-flung ones) in particular. But definitely not a "must have" in most cases.

If it really supports S2, you should get a prompt on inclusion with two options, "Include with security" and "Include without security." You'd want the latter.

But along the lines of the above, I haven't heard of any cases where S2 affects device functionality like this. Can you provide a source that would have more information about this?

Also, you could try the Basic Z-Wave Tool to set parameters mentioned in the manual if you think any would affect reporting for your use case (and the driver doesn't offer it itself). But looks like a 15-min. minimum might be built into the device... (though there are at least two firmware revisions, if not also different hardware, and they might behave differently--I don't know what changed)

There are 2 hardware versions of it -- IIRC, 009 was original and then they released a 039 version. Both have firmware updates available from Aeotec.

OP, if that setting can be changed, it would be done by updating the corresponding parameter(s) as @bertabcd1234 lays out above. Make sure you're on the latest firmware for whichever hardware version you have first, of course.

Watch this youtube video from 8:13 to 10 minutes to verify what I said previously about inclusion. I could have been mistaken but he clearly states many additional controls become available w/o security. I did get the system wrong as the system he used was zwaveJS not HomeAssistant. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XSe60RCvKUk&t=490s

Sounds like there was a problem with his particular controller (ZWaveJS and whatever hardware?) and inclusion using S2, likely an "incomplete" pairing or similar problem, not the device itself. I do not have any problems with mine paired securely to Hubitat.

I also have no problems with operation I just need it to update temp more frequently for it's intended purpose. I will try the ZWave tool you mentioned. Don't care if I brick it as it's not going to be useful at 15 minute update intervals. Thanks for your help!

So while I advocate not using security simply because of speed (it's always a debate with s2 but even the most ardent supporters agree not to use s0) the features available will not be changed by the security paring at all. Features available are going to be determined by the class clusters available by the firmware of the device. Since it's fairly static the onboard firmware is not going to differentiate its availability of features. Besides a device is only going to have so many things available for it's class.

In the video, it was likely a mispairing issue and initially a problem with the key swap during the initial pairing. I've had that happen on some aeotec and some ge z-wave devices.

Had some time this morning to look it up -- looks like that parameter can only be adjusted on the 039 hardware version of the device. Not sure if "V2.0" is referring to a new version of that hardware, or firmware.

The reverse i have found. Without s2 many door locks will not work and the hsm200 turning the light on and off doesnt work.
