Zooz ZSE41 contacts not reliable in LR mode

I replaced some older 700 series contacts with the ZSE41 and figured since they are battery and LR capable, I would configure them all to talk directly to my C8 Pro instead of using a mesh. My assumption was they would be quicker to activate my rules. Initially, I had some reliability issues with them mounted directly to metal doors. I read (I think Zooz says) that mounting them on a 1/4" nonmetallic spacer is recommended for mounting on metal surfaces. So I modified the mounting with a 1/4" plastic spacer. I thought things improved but now am still missing the closing of the contact on occasion. I also believe I occasionally miss open events as well because the lights that are supposed to turn on do not. I have an annunciator that reminds me to close a door if it's been opened for 30 minutes and I get that annunciation, check the door and it is closed. I check my hub and the contact reports that it is open. I have now reset them to be part of the mesh and will monitor their behavior going forward, but why in the world would this be happening? The contacts are with 30 feet of the hub and my zwave settings report 100kbs direct between the hub and the contact. Makes no sense.

I have set debugging and the contact shows that it opened, but there is no log showing that it closed. Is there no acknowledgement in the protocol to ensure the message from the contact was received and a resend until it is acknowledged? I am using the "Zooz ZSE41 OPEN CLOSE XS SENSOR" driver.

i never could get any of the zooz stuff with small 2032 batteries working reliably in long range mode.. i dont think they have enough power to push through,

Interesting. It’s not like they are 500ft away. They are literally with 30ft with a wall or two between. I can’t imagine Zooz would release these as LR with too little power. I assume they go through some compliance testing to ensure they meet specs.

ya well i had a contact i tested.. and would only reach 20 feet beyond the door. not even to mention that i wanted it in my metal mailbox about 50 feet away.. i have better luck with zigbee contact sensor with larger cr2 battery . i do have zigbee repeater/switch in outlet on the outer wall

FWIW, I also had significant issues with range/power with the ZSE41 LR. Very disappointing.

I've had 4 paired LR for quite a long while now, and they are all doing very reliably well - I'm using Jeff's driver, and I'm on ZIP (C-8 Pro). All 4 are all on latest Zooz firmware.

None of mine are at a weird distance though (all inside our small house), or blocked by much metal. Battery life has always proven as expected for a 2032 (so not spectacular, but nothing unusually bad).

I had this issue and switch to the advanced driver (jtp10181 ) and problems went away. I think there are issues with the system driver.

So based on what the general consensus is so far use them in mesh mode with AC devices very close by. The LR performance is not so long.

The driver isn’t the problem. I tested with both HE and HA, and then (briefly) looked at the transmission signal strength with SDR. The problem appears to be the transmission strength of device itself.

I just have one of them, it's on a gate at the rear of my yard. So the signal is going through one internal wall and one external wall (stucco). Total distance is probably something like 80' to 100', and it works perfectly. :man_shrugging:

I have six of them. One of them is chewing through batteries. I'm going to replace it.

But...metal doors? Ugh.

I tried Zooz's XS (xtra small) LR tilt sensor on my metal garage door. Weak, especially in winter. Stuck with the Ecolinks.

They went with the XS concept and one size doesn't fit all, literally.

Beside the LR capability which works in the topology concept but suffers transmission strength, the reason I bought them was for their small size. After adding the 1/4” spacer they lost that appeal. This is my first bad experience with a Zooz product. Oh well, if the mesh paring doesn’t resolve my issue it’s back to ecolink.

so, what's with the metal doors.

You mean why are they metal or why the advice to add a spacer? Metal doors are quite common at least around here. As for the need for a nonmetallic spacer…

As always...this stuff is so site-dependant. :slight_smile: I just wanted to note that in my case this sensor has exceeded my expectations, very happy.

Since I have re-paired some of these contacts into mesh mode, I have not had any lost state changes. I did have another one that was still paired on LR mode and it missed a state change. I re-paired it a few days ago in mesh mode. I think most of what has been said about signal strength must be the cause of the missed messages. I wish it had some confirmation ACK that confirmed the hub received the change but oh well.
