I have a 6-year-old C-5 hub (FW: 2.5.0.153) that has been working fine. I’ve included a variety of Aeotec, Ecolink, Zooz and GE/Jasco devices over the years without too much problem. I have four of the GE/Jasco 46201 light switches with one failed so far. I’m aware of the problems with reliability of these switches and now that I need a new one and Jasco doesn’t really make these anymore I thought I would go in a new direction. So, I bought a Zooz ZEN71/800LR switch and joined it to the network, which mostly went well.
My problem is that it doesn’t report current state promptly or reliably. Basically, if I turn the device on/off at the physical switch the state is immediately updated on dashboards and in the device definition. However, if I issue on/off from a dashboard it performs the action, but the dashboard status just says “sending” and does not update. Same thing within the device definition, I can turn the switch on/off and it performs the action but doesn’t update current state unless I refresh the page. I think this will impact any automations I set up that depend on knowing what the current state is.
When installing I tried an exclusion and a factory reset and rebooted the hub. I then did an inclusion and switched to the “Zooz ZEN Switch Advanced” driver in device type and issued a Configure and confirmed the advanced parameters showed up. I even tried a second switch and it has the same problem. I used to have one of the Jasco 46201 switches in this location and it worked fine (it’s about 15’ from the hub).
Zooz Support has been sympathetic, but not really helpful. They keep wanting to know specifics about the lights being controlled including links to the manufacturer. I’ve told them these are simple outdoor recessed can lights that came with the house and I don’t have the info they seek. I also feel if the Jasco had no problem reporting state then the Zooz shouldn’t either.
My only recourse at this point is to return the Zooz ZEN71’s and try something else. So I wanted to see if anyone else has had this type of problem and if they were able to resolve it.
If not, I’m looking for switch recommendations. My whole network is Z-Wave and I’m just looking for simple on/off paddle switches. It seems like Zooz and Inovelli are what a lot of people like, but I would like to know what particular model numbers people have used.
Use a PC if you have one, and use the web admin interface, and directly on the device page for the device. Open the hubitat system logs in another tab. You are using my driver from the sounds of it, turn on trace logging on the device. Run the On / Off commands from the device page and see if the state changes within a few seconds. If not then try running Refresh. Take a screenshot of the resulting logs and post. (You will need to join the owners group to get access to post images)
Thanks for responding, I hope I got everything you asked for. You mentioned doing a “Refresh” at one point, other than a page refresh of the browser I wasn’t sure if there was another type of refresh to do in Hubitat.
Looks like you turned on Debug logging, I asked for Trace which has more details.
Configure is not needed, did not ask for that.
There is a “Refresh” command ight on the device page.
Also may be a good idea to check all the device settings and make sure they are set to the indicated defaults. Sometimes weird settings combos will make the device not work as you would expect.
Sorry, no Configure this time and Trace logging. Also checked defaults and only found one and that was Parm 12 - 3-way switch type was set to “Momentary Switch”, which I changed to default of “Toggle on/off switch” before retesting.
After turning on trace logging I pressed On in device page, status unchanged until I pressed Refresh and then pressed Off and status unchanged until I pressed Refresh. Screenshot here:
What is the switch firmware, it would be on the Device Info Tab > Device Data.
Also check the Zwave details page and see if it shows if it is paired with security or not, I think the C5 supports S0 security? Not sure how these newer devices would pair, I assume it should be no security.
Zooz has made some updates which is possibly making it not report its status back automatically, however with no security it should still be reporting.
You could also try excluding it and then including again, in case something went wrong during the pairing process.
Firmware for the ZEN71 is 4.1.
From what I understand on the attached note I would see 0x98 if S0 is present.
I have 3 devices in this location, light switch, motion detector, and door sensor.
It looks like the motion detector and door sensor have 0x98 and the switch does not.
My secure join is set to Locks/Garage doors.
This is the change they made back on 3.7 I was thinking of, but I have not heard of anyone else having this issue. Possibly something to do with the zwave stack on the C5.

Optimized Z-Wave reporting behavior: when Basic Set and Binary Set commands are sent from the Z-Wave controller (Lifeline), the device will no longer send redundant report or notification commands back to the controller.
Glad it worked I just keyed that right into the post without validating anything.
So what that does it just immediately asks the device for a status update, same as pressing refresh. Typically in the past they have always sent it back automatically. Zooz has been working on reducing redundant messages and with S2 security and supervision technically you don't need it, because the supervision response confirms the action. I don't think the C5 would work for either so not sure why it would be kicking in on your hub. (I warned Zooz this might happen but the devices I did limited testing on worked as expected still)
You do have this setting turned off correct? That's the only thing I can think of that might make it stop sending the responses back normally.
