Anyone else have this issue, where zen30 only shows one neighbour which I assume affects the mesh not in a good way?
Also I have a number of zen77 dimmers - some get included with S2 Authenticated, some get included with no authentication.. nothing is different during inclusion. Any idea why, and, does it matter?
I would add some beaming repeaters to strengthen things (aeotec 7's)
Chip sets likely... Anytime you can pair without security for things like that the better (less overhead) Avoid s0 at all costs. Really garage doors and locks are all that really need to be paired with security. (At least in my eyes)
I have a ZEN30 and a ZEN27 in the same gang box, the ZEN27 has 16 neighbors and the ZEN30 has 3. So yes I have noticed this issue with the ZEN30 as well. I think now that I see another person has the same issue this warrants opening a ticket with Zooz (@agnes.zooz ticket on the way). It should not hurt your mesh overall but that one device only sees one path to the hub (either direct or through one other device). So that single device may have occasional issues due to its limited routing choices.
For the S2 Auth, I have all my devices that support it, paired with S2, if they come with security I might as well use it (and I expect it to work correctly as well). Unless you are one of those people who leaves your car unlocked with they keys inside?
When you did the pairing, if you did SmartStart they would pair with S2 Auth automatically. If you paired manually, then they should have asked for the DSK (5 digit code) from the device/box. If you did not put in the DSK in time or hit cancel/skip often times the device will pair with no security. I have seen people also say when this happened the device refused to pair instead of with no security so there are mixed reports out there.
Does it matter? Only if you plan to use associations, those only work between device with like security pairings. Also with no security someone could in theory sit near your house and sniff the unencrypted zwave traffic, and also potentially control your devices. That is why rlithgow1 recommended to definitely use security auth on locks and garage doors. Otherwise it will not really effect anything that you will notice.
FWIW I also have one device paired with S0 security, the ZSE40 which many people seem to have issues with, but I have no issues with it at all. It just likes to send excessive duplicate motion reports (every 7 seconds), but it has not caused any issues.
AWESOME info, thank you! There is one pairing that I'll be doing now, then as I grow the devices over time I'll surely add to the "other end" of a 3-way, so that's great info to have.
I'm just in a normal house, no one's going to care if my light switch is on or off, but good point on the garage/door stuff, I'll watch for that in future.
Also, thanks for opening a ticket! I was aware this device is pretty new and right on the website says beta firmware, so I'm not surprised or bothered that there might need to be updates done. (I did go look for new firmware, looks like all of mine are current). Seems like you're in a great spot to help get some attention on it
Well that's not really a big deal. I honestly can't see anyone trying to trip lights and if they want to really see whats going on they can watch the lights in my house go on and off....
similar, although you have way more zwave devices than I do. zen77 has 5 neighbours, zen30 has 1 - both in the same double gang. I can provide any other details that are needed to help trouble shoot, or test...
@tiwing want to provide your feedback as well on this?
Questions From Zooz:
Could you please tell us which firmware your ZEN30 is running on? Is it included with or without security? Does the number of neighbors change if you try excluding and re-including the ZEN30?
The one in the wall I am referring to is 1.05, but I have another one not installed yet that is updated to 1.07. Included with S2 Unauth.
I will have to test doing a reset / replace, and can also test on the not installed one eventually.
I've got 3 zen30s in wall, all with 1 neighbor. They are various distances from the HE which is in the basement under - ish the stairs (yes I know not ideal) , house is standard wood frame construction with no ductwork between hub and any of the zen30.
one zen30 right beside the hub line of sight (6 feet),
one one floor up and "over" about 16 feet (this is the one sharing a double gang box with a zen77) ,
and one 2 floors up and over about 8 feet (which is 6 feet line of sight to two zen77 in a double gang and about 15 feet line of sight to another zen77) . All are running fw 1.05. Two included without authentication. One (closest to the hub) included with s2 unauthenticated
All the zen77 have between 4 and 9 neighbours. I have 12 total Zwave devices excluding the hub and one outdoor motion. 9 Zen77 and the 3 Zen30
I excluded and factory reset one of them yesterday, then reincluded. Exactly the same. I can try the other ones tomorrow eve if needed.
I tried to look for firmware but didn't find any, is 1.07 public?
@tiwing I emailed that info to Zooz as well on my ticket to make sure they got it. I would not worry about doing a reset on anything else right now, in theory that should not matter anyway because if you do a repair it should rebuild the neighbors.
The 1.07 Firmware they sent me as a test file, not sure what it was supposed to fix but I never noticed a difference which is why I never applied it on my other one. Found the old email, something about issues with the stock Hubitat driver but my custom driver never had any issues to begin with using 1.05 or 1.07.
I recently requested updated firmware for all my devices just to see what, if anything, was newer. They sent me 1.09 for my Zen30. They said it is ONLY for hardware version 1.0 though. I don't know what non hw 1.0 firmware is on. Currently my Zen30s are on FW version 1.05.
