Zooz Garages Door

Hi Everyone,

I installed the Zoom Garage door app today but it doesn't work and I need some direction as to the troubleshooting.

If I tap the open button, or approach my home, habitat says it opening and I get at the message, but I do not hear the relay change state. As a test, I used the relay child app and when I manually changed the relay state, the garage door opened...

Does anyone have pointers on where to start? If there is any thing else that is needed, please ask..

Can you include a screenshot of your Zooz GD app setup?

Like your other arrival rule in a previous post, it's not necessary to include the "phone present" condition -- that state is inherent to the phone-arriving event.

ETA - do you always enter the house thru the garage? If so, this rule makes sense. But if not, do you want your garage door opening EVERY time your phone enters the geofence?

Yep - Didn't think about that one.. Yes I only enter thru my garage door..

For the app shot, I meant the one that looks like this:

Summary

Food for thought, but I'd strongly recommend not activating a rule like this until you've verified (over some real-world time & experience) that your presence-sensing setup is working really reliably...

I myself would never open/close doors or operate locks based on my presence arriving/departing -- while my presence sensing works pretty darn good, I simply don't have that much faith in it. But I live in an urban core, so I admit paranoia about opening anything in the blind. Your circumstance may not have such concerns, but I still stand by my caution to vet performance before activating this rule.

My apologies,

Understood, I am only ever going to want it to open the door. I will continue to close the door myself.. I want to ensure the door closes.. I assume you mean pause the rule?

I wonder if the app/device combo is acting as a momentary switch, because that's what the garage door opener needs.

Also, you're using a ZEN17 vs a ZEN16, correct? The ZEN17 has additional settings where inputs can act as sensor. Inputs I mean where the wires are connected. I might not have phrased that properly, but if you fooled around with it before deploying it for garage door duty, maybe you set something so now the wire contacts are acting as sensors.

In short, check the labels too on the connector. I had a label that was upside down, lol.
Make sure you have them going where they should.

When you actuate the relay via Z-Wave, you are by-passing the physical wire connections, so maybe that's why it works and the wire setup doesn't.

Oh, and this is the result of getting overly fancy with a gate opener:

PS: I also had a garage door close on my car as I was backing out.

You can't think of all the possibilities. Throw in hub idiosyncrasies, best to keep it really simple.

Did you set up the auto-off parameter for Relay 1?

If not, that relay isn't getting turned off & on correctly WRT operating a garage door... As @velvetfoot mentions, a GDO relay needs to be (or mimic) a momentary switch, which is what the GDO's dumb wall switch and remotes are. To activate the door (up or down - direction is irrelevant), the relay must turn on but then quickly turn right back off.

You can set that up with 1-2" delay via the auto-off parameter on the relay itself, or in most cases, the easier method is to use the "Relay Switch Auto-Off Timer" option in the Zooz GDO app -- the default selection is 2", and that works fine.

That option is Disabled in my Zooz app setup s/s above since I use the relay ZW parameter method instead.

As far as the security concerns, my earlier point was that I don't ever want a door opening or a lock unlocking without me having eyes on it, so triggering such access-related actions "in the blind" via geofence isn't desirable for me.

But if you're in a less populated area or gated community or whatever, then that may be fine -- I just brought it up as something to consider if you haven't thought of those kinds of things yet**.

** ETA - and even if you have thought about them, I'd still wait on making this rule live until you've verified (thru some time and experience) that your presence is working reliably... If your presence detection is flaky or triggering states unexpectedly or incorrectly, that could mean your door is opening when you don't want it to.

I misunderstood the instructions above the setting and had it disabled…

I reenabled it and will test this afternoon and update you..

Understoood.. I have camera both inside and outside the garage door and the Aladdin app also notifies when the door is opening or closing…

@hydro311,

Changing that setting did not correct my issue....

Is the relay still currently "On"? I think it would need to be Off for the app to work.

If manually triggering the relay (from Off to On) from the device page opens the door, and your wired reed contact sensor reports the correct door position, that's a good sign. Switch the relay back Off when the door is open so it's ready to close.

That's the primary reason I prefer setting up the relay's auto-off via parameter instead of the Zooz GD app -- then no matter how I activate the relay (app, manual trigger, rule trigger, etc), it always performs as a momentary switch.

The current status of the relay is off so the relay is closed... I have the garage door switch wired to the NO and C terminals.

If I manually change the state of relay 1, the door will open and the sensor indicates the same...

If manual activation all works as adverstised, then I'm not sure what else to try... That Zooz app is pretty basic and is very tried-&-true... It's one of the oldest ZW apps still kickin' these days -- it originated from way back when in the heyday of SmartThings, so lots of folks using it over many years.

Since it's a pretty easy setup, I suppose you could try removing the current Zooz app setup and rebuilding it again - if there's a gremlin in there, that may shake it loose.

@hydro311 Hey Chris,

Yea - I will removed everything including all the code and build it back.. Ill check back when I do that - Might be a day or two.. Thank you

Post a screenshot of your settings from the parent ZEN17/16 also. Not sure which you have.

And sensor is hard wired to it as well it looks like?
