Some really good prices for Zooz devices right now.... Just ordered a big stocking order to retire a bunch of old Z-Wave devices.
Thanks for posting. Perfect timing for me, I need a bunch of new smart-bulb compatible switches.
I'll be installing these switches with smart bulbs in places where I would want dimming if they were ever replaced with regular bulbs. I assume there is no downside to getting the dimmer/scene controller vs. the switch/scene controller, even though I won't be using the dimmer capability for now? Specifically I'm looking at the Zen35 vs Zen32 for 5-button and the Zen76 vs Zen77 for single-paddle.
One of very very few pre-Black Friday posts this buying season.
Interesting.
Which deals have you heard about that are worth sharing?
I think the switches are slightly less expensive than dimmers (Z76 $21.95 vs. Z77 $23.75).
Also there is some limitation if you were planning any direct association across devices. I am not an expert but dimmers use one group whereas switches use a different group thus cannot associate across different "species"... not positive about this but other experts can chime in (see note from Zooz below).
I use a few ZEN32s and really like then for location specific scene controls.
From Zooz:
What you need to take into consideration when utlizing the direct association functionality is the Groups that are available. Dimmers will have Group 3 - Multilevel available for direct association programming, while the on/off switches only have Group 2 for On/Off control, so you would not have a matching group for the multilevel dimming when using the on/off switches. It could be programmed using scene control and the held and released options, but direct association has to have the same groups.
On the ZEN32, does that have a direct association to another Zwave device? Wondering if the hub is down can I still control the other device?
Not sure I only use the Zen32 buttons to trigger various rules in the hub. I do have some dimmers (Zen77) set up with direct association for virtual 4way dimming but I don't see those settings being offered in the Zen32 driver.
I am not an expert either but I do have a Zen76 (dummy load) with a group 2 association to a zen77 that is connected to the load. The group 2 association does turn the dimmer on and off.
The zen32 can have associations but I can’t remember what groups it supports. I am only using group 2 so far. There is a zen32 driver available on here somewhere that is specific for associations. You switch to it to set them up then switch back for normal operation. @jtp10181 generic zwave driver also works as well.
OK maybe I misunderstood the Zooz guidance. Sounds like you can direct associate on/off but to direct associate the dimming function (a-la virtual dimming) then they must both be dimmers and associated via group 3? I see the Zen76 driver does have a field for Group 3 association (actually both group 2 and 3). So is the group 3 functionality on a Zen 76 just non functioning? ![]()
I was asking them if I could use a Zen71 to be a virtual dimming location for a Zen72 and they said no.
I was thinking the Zen71 is just sending a switch state to the Zen72 so why does it have to be a dimmer and it is slightly less expensive. Anyway I bought all Zen77s (on sale cheaper than Zen72s) as I have this virtual dimming scheme working at a different location.
See below looks like Zen71/76 don't support group 3. I suppose it is only in the driver to generalize the driver across multiple device types?
Update:
..."The Zooz ZEN71 switch does not support Z-Wave Association Group 3. It only supports Group 1 (Lifeline communication to the hub) and Group 2 (Basic Set for on/off control of other devices).
Z-Wave Group 3 association, which is typically used for multilevel control (dimming), is only available on Zooz dimmer models, such as the ZEN72."...
