Zigbee Radio Disable (Not Working)

I have a situation where the Zigbee disable radio button doesn't appear to be working?

I have three hubs in my environment. One hub I use to handle purely LAN traffic and therefore I have disabled both the Zigbee/Zwave radios to prevent any potential interference.

Recently I have added a number of Wifi Access points to my house and during my attempts to optimize my wifi/zigbee networks I used the channels scan within the Hubitat environment and noticed a PANID that I did not recognize.

On a hunch I re-enabled the zigbee radio on my "lan only" hub and sure enough the PANID matched and therefore indicated that the radio seems to be active even though it should be disabled.

Is this normal? I assumed that when the Zigbee radio has been disabled that the actual radio would be turned off which doesn't seem to be the case. All it seems to do is hide the zigbee radio setting options.

Yes it’s normal. The disable button basically stops communication between the radio and the hub so it doesn’t process Zigbee messages. Radio continues to broadcast.

On my non Zigbee hubs, I personally set mine to channel 26 (weakest channel) and set power to low.

Really? That makes zero sense. If Zigbee is disabled, there are no controls to set channel so how did you do that? My zigbee-less hub is a C7 so no option for power.

Yes this is what I have read from staff here on this community. You enable Zigbee, change channel, and then disable again.

Well you learn something new everyday..... Seems very counter intuitive to me but thanks for the suggestion of changing the channel and turning the power down.

As a matter of interest is that true for the zwave radio as well?

that must be when why when i boot up my backup hub where i restore a cloud backup to have a hot backup hub, even with zigbee disabled a few devices still stray to the wrong hub. lol

Definitely not an expert here (will leave that to the Hubitat team, like @gopher.ny), but DISABLING the Zigbee and Z-Wave radios on the hubs must do more than simply have the Hubitat platform ignore the data coming in from the radios, right?

Otherwise, when a user performs a hub migration backup, then disables the radios, completes the hub migration to the new hub, and then powers up the old hub with the radios 'disabled'... wouldn't that cause a major conflict on the Zigbee and/or Z-Wave mesh networks? Wouldn't the devices possibly try to reconnect to the old radio(s) if they've only been disabled on the old hub, but not yet reset? :thinking: :man_shrugging:

Just thinking out loud here. Hoping @gopher.ny can shed some light on this topic.

That sounds like what happened to me.

Not sure about zigbee but I recall staff saying disabling zwave just inserts a shim and cuts off the system from talking to the radio.

I don’t think disabling the radios is part of the migration. You are supposed to shut the old hub down and leave it unplugged until you determine devices are working on the new one. At that point you could quickly power up and reset both radios and soft reset the old hub (or full reset).
