Ever since I migrated to the C8 my Zen17 has been flakey, until last week when it finally dropped offline altogether. I got it to exclude, but when I tried to reinclude it, it hung up on initializing and makes ghosts, I have spent the whole night repeating this cycle, and it's never included successfully. most time I didn't even get the Discover button and when I did it never did anything. I finally just took it down and removed my garage door from Hubitat, then did the forced removal with the UZB stick. Just curious if anyone has been seeing similar issues.
I've got 1 of them migrated to a C-8. (And 2 that are still on C-7's) No issues with any of them yet.
Maybe I'll try it again after vacation. But honestly, I've lived without working since the C8 came out. It probably isn't a big enough issue to stress over.
What is your power source for it? Is it possible its not getting enough power?
I've got one in a gate controller. It's one of the farthest devices I've got, in a plastic box, and have had no problems. Of course, that was the kiss of death right there.
That's a bummer - mine's been fine since migrating.
My ZW mesh/devices have all been 100% rock-star on C8, but my zigbee has been rocky (although it's been better in the past week since I went to ch 25 / power 4).
Opposite of my C7 where ZW was always rather fragile but ZB was completely bullet-proof.
Sheesh, it's always something'!
It's plugged into an outlet with the 12 VDC POWER SUPPLY, 0.5 A, that The Smartesthouse suggested, the same outlet as the Garage door opener is plugged into.
This one was about 8 feet from the hub laterally with only a frame and drywall between them. Even on the C7 for whatever reason it was always one of my weakest devices, and always insisted on hopping through 2 or 3 other devices, some of which were on the other side of the house. It just seems like it got much worse on the C8. it's the only one I was still having issues with.
With three exceptions, This Zen17, an Aeotec range extender 7 (for some odd reason), and an Eva Logik outlet, all of my Zwave devices have been flawless on the C8, and overall my mesh has been stronger. I think now I'm down to 4 devices with multi-hops, and honestly, I don't understand why 3 of them are hopping, but they work and have good speed so I don't worry about it. the fourth is a Zooz temp/humidity sensor in a gun safe, so I get why that is hopping.
Took all of them out of the mesh last night. After vacation, I may try and get the Zen and the range extender back up ..
I've never been a huge fan of Zigbee, so what passes for a Zigbee mesh is pretty weak, but it does what I need it to.
It should have a usb-c for power also. You could try disconnecting the other supply and power it with any usb power supply 1a or higher. Would be a worthwhile test just to see if thatβs the issue.
Garages are interesting places for wireless signals. You have giant metal objects that come and go and create all sorts of reflections. The garage door itself is often metal cage like. A zen16/17 often sits right on top of a noisy (rf wise) motor with its own radios and electronics.
For our two car garage with zwave sensors I find that having a few zwave repeating devices on the "outer edges" (the walls) helps a lot. We have a zwave switch and an outlet on opposite sides of the garage.
There are two Inovellit Zwave bulbs on the front of the house (it has been routing through one of those), a Zooz outdoor switch on the outside wall behind it, and a pretty weak intematic zwave light socket in the ceiling behind it. I had moved that Eva Logik extender over closer to it hoping it would help, but it never did find it. eventually that extender for some reason dropped off. Since nothing was routing through it anyway, I just took it out of the mesh for now. If I decide to take another stab at it, maybe I will add that extender in first, then add the relay, maybe move the relay away from the opener itself.. get about 10 feet of bell wires and 10 foot USB cord (using @jtp10181 suggestion) see if that makes any difference.
I am wondering if the issues is that it was surrounded by flaky devices? Not sure how well the bulbs repeat, I often hear about issues with bulbs, especially if they ever get the power cut. And then the socket you already were having issues with.
I think a comb of moving it a little away from the opener and a solid repeater should help.
For reference, my ZEN16 is right above my opener (slightly more towards the house side). I have NO other repeaters in the garage itself. There are 3 z-wave switches in various directions about 16-20 ft away inside the house. It usually is just showing a direct connection though, roughly 40-50ft from the hub (my furthest device). I believe on the C7 it would usually route through one of the switches but also would show as direct sometimes.
I think that is more with the Zigbee, but I could be wrong. I have about 5 of these Inovelli Zwave bulbs and haven't any issues with them in quite some time (old firmware, S0, and issues getting the firmware updated. Once I got that taken care of they have all been rock solid and seem to do well as repeaters. But yeah, that socket is definitely an issue. Then again, given its proximity to the relay, there could be something said for signal interference. I really never gave that much thought.
Just as an experiment I have an extra Zwave outlet I might put up there where the relay was just to see if it has the same issues with weak signals ..
See that's what is weird. Actually those and my Front door lock are some of the closest devices, yet they are my weakest ones. The Zen17 has never been direct. I was hoping to go to the C8 it would have been direct. That garage is probably my biggest issue right now, but it's also the thing I want to mess with the least at the moment.
