Zen Thermostat...not installed yet, need help to get it into mode where I can play with it

I have Zen and a T6 thermostats that I am playing with to determine if/how I want to use them. Neither is installed/connected to anything. Battery operated.

The T6 is up and running as if it's connected, allows me to control it on its screen or from HE.

The Zen shows "ZEN" on its screen if I have the back panel connected to it (holds on via magnets). If I remove the back panel (similar to what happens if you removed it from teh wall after mounting) the Preferences/settings are available. But regardless I can't get it to just display the normal thermostat interface as if it were controlling HVAC. It's also connected to HE and can change settings on its device page, but I can't get the thermostat itself to display its normal control interface.

I've had it for a while and am pretty sure that when I first got it I was able to play around w/the control interface on the thermostat in the past, but can't remember what I did to make it allow that when its not connected to HVAC.

Any suggestions?

If i recall correctly, when setting up my zen there was a configuration step involved to tell the unit what it was controlling and how it was wired. Have you tried working through the initial cofig steps?

Ah, yes, that makes sense, I may have to "lie to it" so that it thinks it's doing something. Thanks. Don't remember doing that last time but it's been quite a while...
