I am a new user, getting ready to ditch smart things once my habitat arrives. With IFTTT going pro (and probably out of business without a user base the companies have paid for access to), I am looking to have everything run locally.
I would like to know if anyone knows of a Z-Wave receptacle outlet with control over the TOP outlet such as this leviton or this eaton, minus the horrible unnecessary lights. Any suggestions?
Use the regular outlet of your choice with a controlled in-wall relay behind it.
Edit - as an example, the Shelly 1 is rated at 16A at 120VAC
Edit 2 - with the Shelly 2.5 one can control both outlets independently, with the caveat that the max load for each of the two relays is 10A.
Welcome aaaaandy to the community. ! I don't know of any that fit your description but did the same as below with an Aeon micro switch behind the outlet. I drilled a hole and fed the antenna outside the metal outdoor electrical box.
A lot of good ideas. I currently have broken fingers and dread typing. Forgive the brevity. I had never heard of shelly, though wifi isn't an option. I did not realize the leviton outlet said as much about turning off the light. I had multiple browser tabs open of the same products and missed that. I guess the question then becomes, will a standard zwave driver(?) be able to handle that? I'm glad I don't need to drill, I found one myself. I just bought the last one on amazon for cheap. I don't know why searching never uncovered this. If it works well, I hope I can find more.
Just keep in mind that some local electrical codes explicitly don't allow this, and reserve reversed outlets for outlets remotely controlled by an external switch.
Not that it really matters, or is unsafe in the least.
I think the apparent safety reasoning behind “ground up” is that if a plug happens to be partially dislodged from the outlet, and a metal object happens to fall on the exposed terminals, no big deal if that exposed terminal is the ground. If it’s the hot and neutral, now bridged by that piece of metal, not as good...
My apartment has all ground-up outlets, even the GFCI outlets in the bathrooms. I thought it was weird, so I had to look into it after moving in.
Doesn’t seem that necessary to me to guard against that sequence of events when installing the outlets, but I’m not an electrician so .
