The "no longer in failed list" error (when the node is clearly dead) is an issue with the SiLabs ZIP Gateway that Hubitat is using. Seems like nodes with a lot of neighbors it will automatically fail the removal and kick back that error. Only way to remove will probably be with a USB stick. They do have the option to get rid of the ZIP Gateway now, so hopefully we will see that in the future and this process can be made much easier.
