Panic move when that saw the massive swaps
I'm with @bcopeland - this is clear indication that the overwhelming response to their subscription offer was to leave the platform.
Maybe they were able to secure another source of cash when they had the numbers to show there were people willing to pay to continue using wink?
Although I wonder how many of those people that appeared to be interested in paying for a wink subscription did it just to give themselves more time to evaluate their other hub options.
Yeah, that was what I was just thinking as well. Then again, perhaps Wink's tech team hasn't been able to roll out their subscription model yet, including the ability to disable only those who haven't signed up. They probably need to hire someone. I still have their app on my phone. They've published a new version of that app a little over a week ago stating, "This release contains minor bug fixes and improvements" Wouldn't it be silly if they planned to manage their subscription access via their app instead of their server? I haven't updated the iOS app nor intend to do so any time soon even though I've successfully transitioned off this week.
This seems to be the most likely to me. I doubt they have more than one or two of developers at this point. They either discovered that it was more involved than expected or didn't have the manpower or expertise to pull it off in time without hiring or contracting it out. Whatever the reason, it's another indication of what a hot mess Wink has become.
I pulled the plug on our Wink 2 hub on Sunday, and deleted the Wink app from all of our devices on Tuesday.
Except for the Kidde smoke/CO detectors that are now local-only alarming, my new HE is now doing everything that Wink did...only better!!!!!
Maybe they were able to shed enough users to be able to select a lower tier of cloud service, thus reducing costs. The subscriptions will begin next month when they have to make payroll again.
Well, I hope they stay in business. Competition is good for the consumer, as it drives innovation and cost suppression.
Yes competition is good. but when you have done no updates in 3 - 5 years. its not exactly competition anymore. hopefully they manage to turn something around.
Get yourself a single Ecolink FireFighter and mount it next to one of your Kidde smoke/CO detectors. It will allow you to use smoke/CO alarm conditions as triggers that drive Hubitat automations.
And its on sale right now.
Yeah, there is that... Hard to argue with you there!!
This is the last holdout in my house as well.
That firefighter works well and is a relatively cheap way to pull your existing smoke/CO detectors into HE.
I have a dedicated alarm system with remote monitoring to a central station. The Kiddes came into the house as fill-in-the-gap detectors, for example one is over my DIY 3D printer in case it melts down. The wireless Ademco/Honeywell alarm system detectors are cheap enough now where I didn't mind dropping $120 for three new smoke detectors to dump the Kiddes and do the system properly with professional central station monitoring.
There's a post on here where I described how Wink's implosion was a blessing, because it gave me a kick in the pants to step backwards for a new 30,000 foot view and take the opportunity to re-engineer all of the kludges/hacks for years with new/proper options that have come along since. For example, I can get every alarm system sensor into HE with my AlarmDecoder Raspberry Pi, so there's no need for standalone Z-Wave smoke alarms or window/door contact sensors for HA use.....
FWIW, the Ademco/Honeywell detectors are sitting in the box on our package decontamination table right now, waiting for install this weekend.....
How very cautious of you! That's good.
I live in Texas, we don't decontaminate anything and only social distance/mask probably 50% at this point.
I live in PA where we aren’t even allowed to leave our homes. I shook someone’s hand today. I’m a rebel
So am I. I pulled my mask off at work, and then my friend said I was better looking with it on
It looks like Wink has backed off, probably due to poor subscription rates. Here is the email I received today:
Dear Wink Users,
We want to start this message with a huge and sincere THANK YOU to everyone who subscribed. Wink was in a very rough spot, but thanks to your support, we are able to keep moving forward! It was not an easy decision to switch to a paid service, and we know that the short timeline put a lot of pressure on all of you, but we had no other way to continue the Wink service as it is currently known.
The support we have seen for our subscription service has been incredible. We feel we can extend Wink's free service for the time being, confident that we can set a new start date for the subscription service to begin, giving you all more time to use Wink (subscription-free) whether you signed up or not.
For those customers who have signed up, we want to assure you that the first month's payment has not yet been processed, and we will notify subscribers before we move forward with Wink Subscription.
- The Wink Team
