Will Hubitat ever be a Matter Bridge?

Still quite a small norm. Z-wave is far from dead, Inovelli, Minoston, Jasco, Shelly, and Zooz, among others, are still actively producing devices. On the Zigbee side, Thirdreality, Aqara, Sonoff, Gledopto, and many others are still making devices.

Matter and Thread are growing, but it will still be years before they take over, if they ever do. By that time the newest shiny thing will be out there, and the cycle repeats itself.

That is short sighted in my opinion. Use the protocol that has the best device in each category. That is the point of using a hub, to bring these various protocols together, and automate them.

Why not keep using them?

I don't find it a big deal to have a separate hub/gateway/router /bridge (whatever you want to call it) to bring in devices. That works fabulous in the case of Lutron, as one example. Offload the radios to a different device, and bring them into Hubitat.

The one issue as I understand it is that it would require time slicing to use the Zigbee radio and Thread at the same time. That would be very sub-optimal if usable at all. So Hubitat would have to add another chip, at additional cost, to get this capability. At that point, I think it would require a significant redesign of the hub hardware and software, and a much increased cost.

I don't say this to be mean at all but I moved to Home Assistant for this reason after I got no response to this. The fact that I can now choose what devices on my Home Assistant I want to expose to Google Home or Alexa or anything that supports Matter as well I get to choose what I want to share it as.. IE a smart plug used to run a light I can expose it over matter as a Light or a fan.. the possibilitys are just endless. I dropped Hubitat a long time ago for this reason and honestly so many of my devices had firmware updates that Hubitat never saw. Again Hubitat is good but just feels a few years behind in technology.. Again they are going to focus on what is important to them but this is why I went to HA. Take it for what it's worth.

I don't say this to be mean, but why are you commenting here if you don't use HE?

You can expose all your Hubitat devices to Apple Home via Hubitat's built in Homekit bridge. Or 3rd party Hubitat Homebridge 2.0 (that's on version 3 now, but the name has not changed). I don't think there are any CSA certified Matter bridges for Z-Wave devices.

Matterbridge is a 3rd party HA add-on. Not a problem with it, but there's probably a reason that HA hasn't built an official one. My guess is CSA certification.

This community welcomes contributions from anyone, as long as the content isn’t profane, and remains germane to the conversation.

The HA integration you refer to is a community integration; it isn’t built in. HA has its pros and cons. Among the cons are breaking changes; I’ve certainly suffered from the effects of one of those.

I used to use Hubitat and I am subscribed to this thread.

And I am aware it's a "community add on" it still 100" works and took 5 min to set up.. even for those stilll using Hubitat bridge Hubitat to Home Assistant then use the Matter Bridge..

Thanks for the quick answer.
From my perspective Z-Wave is less popular than Zigbee and I don't expect Z-Wave to survive with Matter/Thread picking up and being supported by big actors (Apple homepod/TV4K, Amazon Echo studio, Google...).
I plan to keep my Zigbee and Zwave devices for sure. That's the reason I'm looking for a Matter bridge capable hub supporting both Zigbee and Zwave.
A Matter bridge would make my zigbee+zwave devices visible on Apple Home even if would continue to consider a more dedicated device like HE for automation. My wife will never use anything than Apple Home to control devices manually. So without a Matter bridge, all my current zigbee+zwave are missing on Apple Home.
Being very satisfied by my HE C4 for many years, if Hubitat was proposing a Matter bridge capability on current C8-pro or future device it would be my choice, Otherwise I consider other solution like HA.
I don't want to multiply smart home hubs. I already have HE and Philips Hue and soon an Apple Matter border router.

Yes, good point with the Apple Home bridge.

You can do this today directly from Hubitat to Apple Home using Hubitat’s built-in HomeKit Bridge feature.

No need to wait for Hubitat to add Matter Bridge functionality.
