Who is turning out the lights?

I have struggled to figure out why some Zigbee lights in my house keep turning on and off at random times.

I can see in the device logs that the lights were turned on/off by Hubitat but the logs do not convey which app triggered this event. I've removed the relevant lights from ALL automations/dashboards within Hubitat. The only remaining hooks are Alexa and Google Home, neither of which are invoked when lights randomly start changing state.

Is my Hubitat messing with the lights just to annoy me? Legit cannot tell why lights are turning on/off and it's a bit unsettling.

Make sure there are no Hints or Suggestions, or whatever they are called for Alexa and Google. They like to create routines and not tell you about them.

Check out Alexa hunches. There will be a log of activities. Many people just turn it off to prevent random issues.

@d114 What @jtp10181 said. Also what do your logs say? What is the common that controls those lights (look at the bottom of each device to see what it's in use by)

Affected devices are in use by:

  • Amazon Echo Skill
    *Google Home
  • Hubitat Safety Monitor

Checked Alexa 'hunches' as suggested by @jtp10181 ; confirmed that feature is not enabled.

The device logs just show device on/off with a source of 'DEVICE' regardless of which app (or even HT itself) initiated the action.

None of the apps connected to the device log any activity, nor is there any reason to think they would be programmed to turn devices on or off at random times.

I would check any routines in google home as well alexa routines (not hunches since you checked that already) If they're still continuing, disable Amazon first and see if that solves it, then google...

I really wish they would add logging to the Alexa and Google apps. There is no way to tell where the command is coming from that is controlling the device if it comes from those apps.

There is also another feature in Alexa, called Guard. I am guessing you are not using it but you never know. If it is set to away mode there is an option in there to enable "Away Lighting". That would also turn lights on an off at random to make it look like you are home.

Also, Google Home I think has similar a similar feature to hunches I have seen before, might be worth checking.

Check the Routines/Scenes in Alexa and Google as well, make sure nothing was setup in there for this device.

Then, I would go to the very bottom of the device page for that device. Check the "In Use By" section. I think you said you removed these devices from everything but double check. Open everything it is being used by and ENABLE LOGGING if possible. Maybe you will get lucky and this will reveal the culprit.

Alexa Guard is looking like the likely culprit, good call. Recently enabled guard to do things like listen for broken glass downstairs at night and the wizards at Amazon thought turning on random bedroom lights upstairs at 3am would be a good solution for home security lol.

Agree the lack of app-specific logs is a bit frustrating. I already had logging enabled in all devices/apps, seems there is truly no log in Hubitat that says "Alexa turned this device on." Wouldn't expect Hubitat to know that it was Guard/Hunches/whatever but at least tell me it's Amazon so I can ask them why they're interrupting my sleep in the name of home security  .
