What was your favorite device or automation that you did in 2024?

For me it was completing my 1st floor blinds automations. Using iblinds v3 motors. 11 blinds and 1 shade(that uses an am43).... Started on the second floor as well.

I'm interested in some blinds but concerned about battery life. What is your experience.

On all but 4 I have solar charger panels (you can't see them really). My AM43 usually goes about 2 mos, 5 months on the iblinds that don't have solar chargers.

Mine was the automatically powering up of my StarLink when my primary internet provider goes out and then powering back off after 30 minutes of return to service of my primary ISP.

pfSense handling the routing based on gateway priority / availability. A custom Python script monitors the gateway status on pfSense and then sends the command to Hubitat to turn on the outlet that the Starlink is connected to.

For me, it would be the automations that I added to my Tesla:

  • When at home, charge only when there is more solar production than house consumption (unless I specifically specify otherwise via a bypass virtual switch)
  • Enable Sentry Mode when the vehicle is not home
  • Disable Sentry Mode when the vehicle is home and plugged-in

I've mentioned this before, but this past year I have rewritten my lighting controller. It allows me to setup lighting by zone (room) with persistence.

At the heart of it is a table for each zone that may contain multiple light groups.

I can quickly reconfigure a zone or add modes. For example, I will eventually add a party and gallery mode. It will only take a couple of minutes to update all of the zones.

I modified some Zooz ZEN73 toggle switches so that the 4-color LED is very visible. Right now, I use it to indicate motion or rule override, plus gate and pump status. Also, a guide light. It's bright enough for night light duty, I'd say, lol.

Probably go with the TUYA ZigBee USB Adaptor Switch 1-3 controllable outlet adapter.
Right around the $10/ea price on AliExpress and so far working fine.

West Smartwings shades incrementally lowered as the sun heads towards the horizon in the late afternoon if lux is = or --> x. Cancelled and raised if lux is <-- y. It took some fiddling to get the levels correct to block the sun based on sunset time.

I'm looking ahead to doing permanent lighting using similar...

I have a very dark hallway as I live in a condo. I put a Hue motion sensor to turn on the hall lights but set rules on how bright the light should be based on the time. That way, if I get up really early when I’m still 1/2 asleep or in the middle of the night I get some light but it doesn’t blind me. Besides me liking it, it also gets a very high WAF.

I do this with our master bath, but for the middle of the night we use a TR night light at 10%

Using Hubitat Hayward Pools Omnilogic add on I was able to integrate my pool with Homekit and Siri. Family loves the ability to say ‘Pool Heater On’. Hubitat is fire.

Try to hardwire them. If that is not possible, make it as easy as possible to recharge them. If you are covering multiple side by side windows and don't need to worry about room blackout, buy multiple shades to install side by side instead of one very wide shade. This is because the narrower the shade the less weight and thus the less load on the motor, so the battery lasts longer.

My Comfortex were supposed to last for up to 6 months between charges. They open and close once a day. When I first got them they lasted up to 50 days between charges, but 2+ years later I'm lucky to get 30 days between charges.

Lutron shades are expensive (like many of their other smart device product lines), but mine were installed all over my house about four years ago and I’ve only had to change batteries once.

Do they have both tilt and raise\lower. My guess is tilt is easy on the battery and raise\lower is harsh.

Sorry I may not have been reading closely enough.

Their shades are pretty amazing but I’m not sure they do blinds with slats.

ETA: Actually it looks like they do have wood blinds. I can’t speak to the battery life on those; it’s likely to be longer than some competitors’ options but probably isn’t quite as impressive as my roller shades.
