I decided to upgrade my 7+ year old C7 to C8-pro - taking advantage of the $15 discount ![]()
What is purpose for the old C7 hub? Can it even be used as a hot spare - to plug-in and restore to if the C8-pro dies...?
Using it as a hot spare will work as long as you donโt add any new devices. You could disable its radios and restore backups once in a while to keep it current.
I use multiple hubs to help distribute the load (I have A LOT of devices and rules), but I donโt fall in the normโฆ
My recommendation would be to give or sell it to a friend or relative that has interest in home automation, but with the understanding that (unless you want to be) you are not their tech support. ![]()
Since your hubs have different capabilities/features I'd think using it as a hot spare would not be a good idea unless you want to limit yourself on the C8-Pro to only use capabilities available on your C7. There is a post here about setting up hub fallover...
I'd keep the C7 around at least for a little while and consider if you want/need to split some types of "work" between hubs (devices/apps here, LAN/Integrations there split devices by floor or other areas, using Hub Mesh to share any devices between hubs as needed).
My primary hub is a C8 Pro. I have a C7 on hub mesh to support a few overly chatty devices. No issues on the C7 for a few of them and I also keep the Ecobee Suite there because of a single attribute I want that the built-in app does not support. "Thermostat as a sensor." My retired C8 is living in a box. I probably should sell it.
I received an email with the $15 discount, but the prices I see are in Canadian (I am in the US). Did you experience anything similar, or did the price convert to freedom units when you added it to your cart?
I did not see Canadian prices.
