I looking for a way to monitor the power usage of my outdoor well . We share a well with two other houses, the well is on my property and is run off my electricity. I need to know how much power is being used so we can make sure we are getting reimbursed fairly. i would love if there was something simple , just plugin device.i guess i need something stronger then an item designed for a lamp.
any ideas? thanks guys
Are you trying to monitor a pump? What voltage?
If you're in North America, and it is a 120V pump, then something like this might work:

If it is a 240V appliance, then perhaps something like this:
I don't think the 240 v switch is that simple, since you have to splice it in.
Maybe a power monitor sensor, like Aeotec's Home Energy Monitor, where you put the CT clamps on wires in the panel. Of course, you have to be comfortable with opening the panel and putting the CT clamps on, without killing yourself, but it's simpler.
I have both of those devices.
As I recall, getting the driver set up for the HEM wasn't super easy. It's not being maintained, and I, who knows nothing, had to make an adjustment for string to number, or something like that. It's been rock solid though. Z-wave and sending readings for the whole house at 5 second intervals.
The Aeotec switch, although you supposedly can, I wouldn't mount it outside without additional weather protection.
Or a IOTaWatta power monitoring device. There is allot of talk of that on these threads.
Edit Never mind it looks like this is no longer avaliable. It became to big and the person making them has decided to discontinue retail sales. Only dealer for them is currently in AUS.
thanks mr. velvet
please allow me to clarify.
this well is plugged in to a dedicated outlet running off my breaker box
By that do you mean there is conduit from the pump to the breaker box. Or is there a physical 120/240v outlet near the pump that then is wired to the breaker box.
the well uses 20 amps . so we have a dedicated line coming from the breaker box. i then plug in the well to an outlet that feeds off this line
So it is 20A at 120V? Or 240V?
Can you post a photo of the outlet/receptacle and the plug please?
I ask this because NEMA 5-20R receptacles can accept both NEMA 5-15P plugs and NEMA 5-20P plugs. If your well pump uses a NEMA 5-15P plug, then the Zooz ZEN15 linked to in my earlier post will work. If your well pump uses a NEMA 5-20P plug, then the simplest method would be to measure the power consumed at the breaker using a CT.
At 240V, the receptacles will be a NEMA 6-20R, and once again, it easiest to measure power consumption at the breaker.
If your well pump uses a NEMA 5-15P plug, then the Zooz ZEN15 linked to in my earlier post will work.
The Zooz site states the max load for the Zen15 is 15 amps

HI guys!
pardon my ignorance
i should have provided more info...
the well is 20 amps it is a pentair PSP19T-T02-01
sorry the system wont allow me to post photos
if you email me at bonusgelt@gmail.com
my auto responder will email you a link to my photos
Correct. But if it uses a NEMA 5-15P plug, it uses 15A max.
All @user6069 knows is that it is a 20A breaker. That does not mean the pump is a 20A device.
As an example, once upon a time, all dishwasher circuits were run as 20A circuits. But my last two dishwashers came with NEMA 5-15P plugs; i.e they needed 15A max. And that’s why NEMA 5-20R receptacles are designed in a manner that one can plug in either a NEMA 5-15P plug or a NEMA 5-20P plug.
That’s your pressure tank, not your pump. The pressure tank doesn’t use any electricity.

Yeah, I was gonna grab another one and was really disappointed.
If you’re still wanting another IoTaWatt…
I think @marktheknife was looking for another one too (I'm likely wrong on that though)
hi guys !
i found on amazon
Poniie PN2500 Professional NEMA 5-15 for $49.99
would it work for 20 amps ?i am getting confused reading the amazon description. not sure if its chinese junk or a good device?
No. Devices that use 20A are required by the NEC to use a NEMA 5-20P plug. That device has a NEMA 5-15R receptacle. The two are not compatible.
