Volkswagen blocks Home Assistant by requiring client assertion

Login no more possible, Android App still works · Issue #967 · robinostlund/homeassistant-volkswagencarnet

comment: This is not a bug. Volkswagen disabled the API permanently. It was nice while it lasted...

There is always the risk of unofficial APIs to go away. We can all remember Life360, right, and many others? Can we really blame the companies for retiring a service that was not meant to be used by others?

Sometimes official APIs go away. MyQ is a case in point. And wasn’t Life360 an official API?

What we’re learning over and again is that cloud-dependence was bad, and remains bad.

Was a public API used with unofficial authorization tokens.

If I am paying for the service and it was open when I initially purchased it, yes.

Open has such a broad meaning. If it was a published public API, then I am 100% with you.

OTOH, ff it is a reverse-engineered API as appears to be in this case, then by closing it, the manufacturer could “legitimately” claim to be making their/your system more secure.

Reading through the comments, it was a free API. So that, I can kind of get it. Apparently, the paid version works.

My situation - My Subaru has subscriptions that are paid (the only way to get the access to the remote features in the first place) and a website that works. The HA app uses the web version to make its calls. So, presumably, they would have to shut down web access to shut down the HA app.

I don't really have an issue paying for the subscription. It requires cellular network to communicate, and requires servers. So, at less than the cost of a smart watch or tablet on my cellular carrier, I get remote access to my car. And I don't do a watch - cause bluetooth works just fine on my Garmin and I get three weeks on a charge - unlike my old cell compatible Samsungs that only lasted a day and a half at best.

So, if they kill the website, that was part of a paid subscription that I have to pay for a year in advance, then yeah, I would be upset and talking to my credit card company. (Their app is crap from an interface perspective)
