Can custom variables be used for notifications in HSM or just the standard ones like %device%, %value%, %time%, and %date%? or is this an @bravenel questions?

"Use case is I have smoke/CO detectors and want HSM to specify whether it is smoke or CO (or both) that tripped it. I have created a hub variable and used RM to set string values of "Carbon Monoxide", "smoke" or "carbon monoxide and smoke" as applicable. I've tested that and it sets the variable correctly. But without tripping the detectors I can't test the final bit, hence the question."
As I mentioned there, I tested this, and only the "built-in" variables work.
You can test this without setting off a smoke alarm, too. Use a virtual one, or try another method like contact sensors for intrusion with a real or virtual device.
