I can successfully ping xxx.local to my HE7 but when I attempt to ping from my WIn11 computer, the pings fail. I can successfully ping several of my RPi using the xxx.local name. Any ideas why it fails using the HE7 local name?
Assuming you're usinga Windows device this may (or may not) be of interest:
Upgrading to Windows 11 Pro will also fix the mdns issue and some other annoying 'features' of networking. Bless their pointy heads.
I am running Win11 Pro so that doesn't resolve the issue.
If you ping a .local it is up to that node to answer the dns query with 'thats me at a.b.c.d'. Reboot the node that didn't answer, in this case Hubitat. I do a lot of .local queries on my flat home network and nodes just get stuck. It's also possible that the answer was sent but Windows dropped it - all too likely. Hopefully your router is not involved in .local mdns.
I forgot to mention caching. If a node knows that hubitat.local is 192.168.1.5 (for example) because that is in the cache from the last time it asked then that will be used, until the cache is flushed. In that case reboot the node that is asking. So reboot the node that you are asking for. If that doesn't work reboot the node that is doing the asking.
@ccoupe ... I've rebooted both the HE7 as well as my Win11 computer and the problem persist but does work on two (2) of my Raspberry Pi devices.
Two other rpi's can resolve hubitat.local but your win11 box can't, but used to work.
That almost sounds like a win11 problem - any recent updates to win11? You can give .local names to the rpi's and see if win11 can use them but that's can be a lot of work for you.
Correct... the Win11 can resolve the RPi devices using its .local name. It is just the HE7 I'm having problems.
Is hubitat on a different segment of your network?
No, I have a flat network... 1 subnet with ~90 devices.
I'm out of ideas - flailing at straws. What name server is your Win11 box using? Which name server for hubitat? Here I'm speculating that one of them is using a name server that should be ignoring .local
I'm out of ideas as well ![]()
For my HE7, I am pinging "hubitat.local"
What happens if you ping http://hubitat.local ?
Mine only works if I add the http
Win10/11 is literally a hit or miss mDNS game depending on anything from Bonjour services installed to 32/64bit solutions. And wasn’t even supported until late in the Win10 lifecycle. If you are troubleshooting the problem…most likely your concern is with Microsoft and not Hubitat. But wish you all the lucks.
@neonturbo ... that fails as well
Ok... I accept trying to ping or http from my Win11 computer to HE7 will not work.
