Upgraded from C5 to C8 Pro and none of my Zigbee devices work :(

I just upgraded from a C5 to C8 Pro following the official guide and none of my zigbee devices work. Everything else (LAN and Z-Wave) and the integrations seem to be working.

When I look in the Zigbee details section the table of devices show none of them have a last message stamp or a Msgs count.

I tried rebooting the hub a couple of times. Tried shutdown, waiting 5 mins and restarting. I tried using the reboot radio and rebuild network buttons but none of that helped. I also tried changing the channel and power from 20/8 to 25/16 following advice I saw in some other thread but that also didn't work.

Finally I took one of my zigbee devices and reset it and repaired it to the hub. The hub detected it immediately and it repaired back into the original device so that's good. It's functioning perfectly fine now. Does this mean I have to reset and repair every other device? That would be a serious ballache. Please help!

When you do the migration back up make sure BOTH the z-wave and zigbee radio buttons are checked. You can simply re do the migration. On the c8 go to yourhubip:8081 , pick advanced and do a full reset and re do the migration.

I just tried a full reset and repeating the migration. This time I have a very slightly better result: 5 devices are showing a message and msgs count in the zigbee details and the others are all blank (I have around 60 in total). As with last time I also got a notification saying weak zigbee channel found.

Any other suggestions? If I try chaning the channel and power would I risk losing the 5 devices that seem to be working this time?

change your zigbee channel to 25 then reboot (do a database repair for giggles)

roger that. how do I do a database repair though?

when you reboot (I assume you're on .199 or .200) it will prompt you if you want a database repair

Thanks, I've done that. Now back down to 1 device
It does say it can take up to 24 hours or longer for some devices to update. And the banner saying weak zigbee network has disappeared. So guess I just wait a day and see if it changes?

give it a couple of hours You can speed it it up by power cycling mains based devices first then battery

Thanks, I've turned the mains powered devices off/on from the wall. :crossed_fingers: everything starts to come online over the next few hours.

Switch to channel 25 as well

I switched to 25 yesterday. Looks like quite a few more devices are responding and working now but not all of them. Some seem to be communicating (there's an entry in the last message column) but they won't respond to any commands from the hub. A few others still haven't communicated at all. Wondering if I try increase the power, or attempt any other changes? Or should I just start individually re-pairing the ones that haven't worked?

I wouldn;t go over 12 for power...I had a few devices that I had to re pair when I changed (a couple of NYCE sensors) or even just try removing the batteries from any non talking devices and putting it back in.

I think it is also important to know what devices are not working. Going from the C5 to thr C8 pro means you also got newer zigbee radio tech. From the C8 on the included zigbee radio is zigbee 3.0. That caused some non compliant/older zigbee stuff to stop working like gen 1 Iris gear.

Agree with Mavrrick... When I moved from C7 to C8, my zigbee went from being flawless to terrible. 3 things solved it for me:

  1. Moved from ch 15 to ch 25. My Hue bridge has forever (10 yrs?) been on ch 20, and I've historically used ch 15 for zigbee (originally SmartThings, then C7). But moving out to ch 25 on my C8/8P definitely helped stabilize things.

  2. Removed older (ZHA 1.2) repeaters in my zigbee mesh so that all repeaters are ZB3.0. Fortunately, I just had 2 older devices to replace, but they were both very heavy-use repeaters in my mesh. Once I replaced those with ZB3.0 coverage, the improvements were immediately noticeable.

  3. Dropped ZB radio power to 4. I have a lot of ZB 3.0 repeaters well-positioned, so dropping the radio power shifted the communication workload to them instead of devices fighting over each other trying to communicate directly to the hub.

I can't promise these steps will solve it all for you, but my zigbee mesh returned back to being awesome and extremely reliable. Good luck!

Agree that experimenting w/the lower power settings on the Zigbee radio is where I'd start. I found better results w/almost all of my Zigbee devices on my C8 connecting through repeaters rather than directly to the hub.

Also very important to look at...

Thanks everyone. I've been individually re-pairing all the devices that didn't migrate over. They're all online now. I'll monitor over the next week and hopefully all devices remain stable. Appreciate all the help and advice

So you're on channel 25, where did you end up w/Zigbee power setting?

If you do run into issues and your power level is 12 or higher, I'd recommend trying lowering the power level one step at a time (i.e., 12 to 8, 8 to 4).
